DVD Recorder tray won't open

We have a Philips DVD player/recorder model DVDR3460/75. For some time it has intermittently not opened the tray but has now got to the stage where it usually isn't possible to get it to open. It has the latest firmware, I pulled the lid off and managed to get the tray to open a few times but with the lid back on it has stopped working again. The door appears to be "trying" to open when commanded and the display shows "OPEN". Can anyone suggest a fix or even is it possible to replace the drive with one from a computer? Philips directed us to an approved service centre in the city (we are in Country Victoria) and they want $60 to look at and give a quote and I expect it is "not worth repairing" in their eyes. We hope someone can help.

It may be that the motor or

It may be that the motor or belts inside that push the drive tray out are dead or broken. Unfortunately it's not an easy job to fix - it sounds to me like it's on its last legs.

DVD Recorder tray won't open

Can you hear any noise when you hit the eject button? If there is no sound, or just a consistent tone that comes on and then goes off, then it's probably the motor trying, but not able to move the gears.

If it were mine, i'd pull off the cover and look for the gears that open the tray. They might be misaligned, jammed, or not gripping properly.

Could even be a result of dust build up. Maybe try cleaning the gears with some compressed air.

I don't think this recorder has the type of drive that can be replaced by a PC drive unfortunately.

Good luck.

DVD Recorder tray won't open

Thanks Ghost, I cannot see anything untoward with the gears etc. I finally managed to track down a service manual (from ManualUniverse.com) which you pay for by PayPal then they allow you to download the PDF file. Whilst it doesn't say much about the drive, it does mention a slot underneath and by inserting a screwdriver or similar and sliding it towards the side of the unit the tray opens and the drive slides out. Not an elegant solution long term but at least we can get discs in and out now and they play OK!
Thanks again,
Ian

Well, a very unconvetional

Well, a very unconvetional way to open the drive but as long as it works and doesn't damage the drive even more it should be okay ;) To me it seems to be a motor problem since the gears are working. That's very hard to fix and I also wouldn't dare to do it but maybe you know a technical expert that might be able to help you.

Philips DVD Recorder doesn't open the tray.

I have the same problem with a Philips DVD R 3380. The problem is that the plastic of the drive unit is too weak (the "ceiling" part). It seems to me that the solution is to get a new drive (if it exits) or to reinforce with a metal (rigid) plate the ceiling part of the drive. Open the equipment and try to observe if the plastic bends when you press the button EJECT.

Problem Opening Tray.

It might be a pain (and may work) but will save a few $$$.......
Does the tray open after you power off at the wall, wait thirty seconds then
power on again?
I recently had a problem and this rectified it.

Phillips DVD door does'nt open

I have the same problem with the Phillips DVD727K PLAYER. It's always been like it. After reading the blog sound like a manufacturing problem to me. I give it a bit of a bang on top and it opens. When it finally gives up guess what, I wont be buying a Phillips. You should not expect this from a so called quality product.
