Hi Zachy-90. There are only a few good high-def camcorders for under $1000. Try to avoid pocket cams like the Flip HD if you can -- while they produce reasonable video, the audio is usually poor and they also have terrible optical zooms. In other words, they're not ideal for making a documentary with.

The Sanyo Xacti HD 1010 is one of the better HD options in your price range. It has good low light performance (perfect for England) and plenty of advanced features. However, it's unconventional pistol grip design may take some getting used to. If you prefer a traditional-shaped camcorder, the Samsung VP HMX20 is very good. You can read about both models here:

HD or SD?

There are many good cameras for under 1000 USD. Even HD. Kodak Zi8 will be shipping in september 1 of this year and is HD with Image Stabilization, external microphone jack and good low light. Also it will capture 720P60 which is 60 fps of HD video! This is probably the unit you want. It is 180 USD.

Kodak Zi8 sounds pretty good, especially with the external mic jack, ive looked at some other cheap cameras and their downfall is no jack.

Are you writing from

Are you writing from Australia or the US? Because if you're talking US dollars, the number HD camcorders for under $1000 widens considerably.

It's the other way around,

It's the other way around, unfortunately. Because of the exchange rate, there are LESS high-def camcorders in Australia for under $1000. Anyway, why not take a look at the site's Digital Video section? - you can narrow the search to concentrate on camcorders that cost $1000 and under.
