  • Pros
East of use, cost of buying
  • Cons
    Yearly fee for HD Live

I have had a Tom Tom Go 820 Live for about a month now. I do a lot of driving mainly on main or artrial roads. The unit clearly shows the speed you are driving and the speed limit in the area which is great in Sydney where the speed limits change so rapidly. It points our red light and traffic cameras very clearly with plenty of time to stop. I have not had a problem with finding a street at all. I find it a great user friendly unit. I do wish something went of when I was doing over the speed limit though, maybe it does I just cannot find it. Cheers, csimic@dodo.com.au

    Can't acquire a GPS Singal

As this is a GPS device a complete inability to pick up a GPS signal renders this unit useless. I have updated the software correctly and still it will not work. Avoid this unit at all costs as you will see from other reviews this is not an isolated issue.

Apparently TomTom are aware(according to the retailer, yet they still continue to sell and actively promote this unit!

    Doesn't work

Since the purpose of the GPS is to assist you to navigate where you are going, the connection to the satelite within a relatively quick timeframe from turning the unit on is necessary. On purchase, I was advised that to fix a known bug, I must load up the new software update before I tried to use the device. I followed the stores and TomTom website instructions successfully (according to the software queues on my device and online). The device worked for my first trip home and then for next 5 days it stopped working, in as much as it was unable to locate a satelite signal from anywhere across two states. Even after reseting to factory settings and starting whole process again, the device is still unable to locate a satelite signal. My opinion - most expensive lemon I've purchased for a long time. It is on its way back to the store!

    getting started via webb

i have many company cars and find tomtom the best for our needs, the go 730 is my choice, only because i have trouble with the start up webb procedure, but after a computer tech got me going i found the go 820 brilliant.

Clairity of instructions on live 820

Backing up the Tom Tom 820 live

I have used several previous verions of the Tom Tom and have found them easy to use. Firstly I had to return a faulty unit, would not connect to Satellite then could not opperate it from my PC (Back-Up etc) as the programme recommended was not compatable with my operating platform (Windows 7 Professional). The battery life however is a lot better than my 730 which was around 30 seconds on a good day.
