brother and myself got this phone around September 2011. it worked well for around the first 2 months and then the problems started; the phone non-stop freezes and asks to force close apps, randomly restarts itself without warning, always glitches and lags, runs really slowly, battery life is appalling(lasting about half a day), wont send texts and sometimes wont connect calls, doesn't receive texts regularly, doesn't receive picture messages without 3G (even if you are connected to WiFi). music player randomly stops and changes songs and the menu takes a long time to load. altogether a crappy phone. do not buy this phone.

I brought this phone in August last year and the phone has crashed twice now losing all of my contacts and data. I put in for repair around xmas time and the same thing has happened again.I was pretty impressed with this phone until the malfunctions, i'm currently looking for a new phone as i have lost faith in the Huawei brand.

Excellent phone considering the price $188. It is a little slow at times due to the 600 Mhz Processor, but overall I would recommend it for people shopping for a sub $200 smart phone.

As my first smart phone I wanted something cheap. I wanted to buy it from somewhere I could return it without hassles if I didn't like it (Wollies). I wanted Android OS. I wanted a phone I could use as a router while travelling in the car. This phone does all that and more. Sure it's all plastic but it's a lot lighter than an iphone which means I don't notice it my pocket so much. It's a good size for my hand but the camera is pretty crap and accessories such as good covers ect are hard to find. I'm buying one for my wife. For the price you can't go wrong. Stu.

Best $188 I ever spent, slick and solid little computer/gps device with a crisp touchscreen that even makes phone calls.
I can plug it into my laptop and use it as a modem too.
I show this thing to friends with iphones and samsung galaxies, and tell them that I bought it at the supermarket, and that it's unlocked, with no contract, and they look a bit disbelieving.
If you are looking for your first smartphone, this is a no brainer.

I love my Sonic. It does 90% of phones that cost three times as much. The screen is a decent size, but the phone still fits into my shirt pocket. It works well as a wifi hotspot and I have bought a car charger and window mount so that it works fine as a turn by turn GPS. The camera is very average, but is fine for day to day snapshots.

Excellent value for money; fast wireless; comfortable screen size; good/useful set of apps
Cons

• • •

Extremely good value for $$. Right now it's as low as $188 (@DSE, Woolworths, etc), and I reckon all major brands charge about 2x as much for a similar set of features. Manufacturing quality seems quite fine and sturdy from any angle, and I'm confident it'll last at least 2 years without any worries. My personal opinion is WOW this is pretty much all what I need in a smartphone; it's fast and with a useful set of preloaded apps (camera could be a bit better though; battery lasts about 1.5 days (light-mid use)).

Have just bought this phone, used to have an iPhone 3GS... its a better phone hands down, does everything my iPhone did plus I have SD Card connectivity. I'm happy with the build quality, audio and clock speed for web surfing. Its a great little phone for an excellent price. One minor thing I have noticed is LED bleeding on the dialer (I will be downloading an upgrade from Market). Also will be good when more 3rd party products are available for the phone, but apart from that its just great!

How do I link with Testra?
• • •

Can ANYONE out there tell me how to link my huawei to the telstra 3G network? On 2G I had everything but linking my emails to the phone. I had set up a gmail account and could also get internet - but I couldnot connect to my emails at bigpond.com. So I took it to telstra - big mistake there - they took out the 2G sim and replaced it with a 2G sim. Now I can't get any internet whatsoever - not even the gmail account that I had set up on the 2g card.
Can anyone help me to work out how to connect my telstra internet, google and gmail back to my Huawei Sonic?
Thanks.

I agree with ALL of the positive comments above...for the price, this is very good value.

Several times a day the phone displays a black screen lit by a backlight and doesn't respond to commands. Once the phone went into and endless turn on / turn off loop.

The phone doesn't support adobe flash at all but can somehow play youtube with a special app.

The phone hurts my ear when I talk on it with protruding casing around it's edge.

Dick Smith refuses to give a refund. This phone is rubbish and while it has android, it is unstable and unreliable. Not a good phone.

Cont'd from previous:

Phone is very slow and frequently stops responding. It is essentially a "lemon" or "rubbish" product.

There is probably nothing wrong with my phone -

It is the lack of stability of the Huawei Software / Firmware that make for a phone that frequently makes apps stop responding / force close all the time. Even a total black screen crash happens very often - a few times a day.

When a total black screen crash occurs, none of the buttons work and the only solution is to remove the battery.

The phone will become slow when typing a message, half the time will ask to force close the message or will just lock its self. Wont let my credit get below $13 and i have to keep recharging, Tried to send a message when i had $15 of credit. PHONE wouldnt send the message.
Its either me or the phone is just really really crappy im sick of having this happen even tho i have credit.

I bought one of these phones, because of my HTC Desire malfunctioning 3 weeks after the 12 month warranty and was looking at least $150 for them to look at repairing it.
Apart from Hyundai Plastic feel and the really simple B grade camera it is a really impressive phone and would recommend this phone to anyone.
I bought mine from Dick Smith $188 and if your thinking should I or shouldn’t I, and not concerned with expensive photography, buy it is worth it.

"popped" apart for sim and battery installation easy enough, fingernail slot under power switch.

Works well using it as a modem for my laptop, I'm impressed, bought another for my wife.

Great value for $188. Works very well. Like the 3.5 inch capacitive screen. Very responsive. Mostly get 3 days from battery. Hope Huawei look at having a camera flash and better camera quality on future models. Apparently cannot read barcodes very well with the Woolworths app, although I have not tried it.

A friend at work bought one the other day and I just had to have one. Great phone !
BTW - Getting the back off is simple ! I even managed to get it off after a heap of beers !
To get the back off to put the battery in, just use your thumb nail and put it into the little slot just behind the on/off button on the top right of the phone and lever off gently.
Hope this helps others :)

What you get for the price, Huawei's custom user interface, included memory card of 2GB, built in back up and recovery tool
Cons
Camera doesn't function very well with barcode scanner, can be a little sluggish (common for 600MHz androids), can't get software to manage phone, amount of crap that is on the desktop when you first start the phone
• • •

I purchased my phone from the local Dicksmith in Queanbeyan on the 16th of August 2011.

First thoughts:
Opening the back case is a bit of a pain in the ass, what you do is there is a little tab just bellow the power button (looking with the screen facing up) you pry that down and then run your fingernail along the gap it creates to "pop" it off

Once I got the phone running I was very impressed with the half charge the battery had, and how quickly it charged.

The user interface is very clean and easy to use, the icons are very user friendly.

Brains wise this phone despite having a slow processor by today's standards is quite powerful, I have successfully streamed live via uStream on my phone over the Telstra NextG network without any issues.

The beauty of this phone is that its predictive text is configured in a way that allows you to swear if you so desire, it also easily allows you to add new words to the dictionary as needed to help improve predictive typing.

I haven't fully tested the GPS navigation as of yet but from initial stuffing around with Google Latitude and Groundspeak's Geocaching application, the GPS is very good.

The internal accelerometer is a bit laggy (as tested with the paid version of SmartTools) but given the price this is to be expected.

The lack of a face fronting camera is disappointing but yet again it's price easily negates this caveat. The rear facing camera is a bit of an annoyance, it doesn't have a macro function which makes scanning UPC codes with the barcode scanning app not possible unless the barcode is the size of Jupiter. I imagine that a cleaver cookie on Instructables will come up with a temporary hack that will grant this much needed functionality. QR codes as expected scan perfectly.

One of a few things that annoy me with this phone is the amount of crap that is thrown on the desktop of the phone when you first start it, it's really annoying trying to get it the way you like it and having to drag stuff to the bin whilst still getting use to the use of a touch screen.

The USB charging ability is one of my favourite features and one that I dearly missed with my previous phone.

The built-in compass works perfectly which is quite nice and tilt compensation works as expected, this will make using your phone as a navigation device allot easier when your velocity is bellow that which is required for GPS to give you an accurate bearing.

One of my main gripes is the software for the phone is not available at the moment, it appears Huawei either did a website redesign and forgot their cheapie phone or they pushed it out the door just a moment too fast.

Final summary/ TL;DR
Overall the Huawei Sonic is an exelent first starter phone, the entry level price is quite nice and seems to not quite give justice the amount of features and quality of the phone.

Ive had this phone for a week and have just purchased a second one for my partner. This phone is surprisingly good.. i normally don't write comments like this but just had to with this product. The phone is solid, well made, the android 2.3 looks and works great, and i'm generally just amazed at how much you get for the $188. Soundimg like a salesman now but just cant recommend it enough.. stoked.

ps.. be aware though, if the camera is important to you, you wont like this phone.

This is a great phone. So easy to use. It may be cheap but can do almost everything the other higher priced phones do. I’m so happy I bought one.

The review here needs to be corrected. The buttons do light up and the Sonic handles Flash really well. I had no problem getting the back off to insert my SIM.

The only things I am not happy is the sound quality on the videos and the camera doesn’t focus well.

My first impression after unboxing the Q702 is that it is a nice looking unit. Styling is somewhat minimalist but very effective. The tablet part, once detached, has a nice weight, and no buttons or switches are located in awkward or intrusive positions.
