I bought a surface pro 3 and I agree it is an excellent product.

I have been looking for a replacement for my 10 year old acer laptop which was just getting badly slow. I started searching about a year ago, first by reading lots of reviews for best ultrabooks or performance laptops. Frustratingly all of them have significant flaws, if it's not the battery, it's a bad screen resolution. The more I read, the more I wanted what's best, at a lower price than a MacBook pro of course. Looking for a 15in ultrabook, the Samsung ativ book 9 2014 edition seemed perfect, however expensive, but after waiting 6 months for a release in Australia without any news got me started to look elsewhere. I then considering the Dell XPS 15, which really has got it all, and is still slightly cheaper than a MacBook pro, but couldn't justify the expense (at $2,500 for the SSD version).

I was also interested in windows 8, having not tried it but keen to try a new interface that can change the feel of the good old windows OS experience. However I realized that a laptop with touchscreen doesn't really make sense; why having to poke and swipe at the screen when you can do it all on the keyboard which is at closer range.

I then looked at cheaper option in the hybrid range, almost getting the yoga 2 pro, but resisting due to some concerns with the keyboard being overly exposed in modes other than laptop, and cost ramping up quickly as specs are going up.

I had heard of the surface but though a Microsoft hardware can't surely compete with established laptop manufacturers. Reading about the new surface pro 3 got me interested though, having the best of both tablet and laptop for my kind of use, and with really good overall specs. I tried one in a store and bought it online with a student discount (use it if you know anyone with a school email address), and it's been great so far. First impression was when trying the fresh paint app, and the quality of the image was just amazing.

I picked the i5 128Gb because I thought it's the right value, anything above was getting too pricey. 4Gb of ram is enough as I don't play much games, and the "smaller" disk drive keeps me from dumping too many images on the drive. With all the online and external storage possibly available, it's not worth to pay more for internal storage.

Highly recommend that unit, great product. I do like much the windows 8.1 OS, it's visual, information moves on the screen, very organic. Compared to my wife's MacBook, for half the price, I feel I've got something better in hand.

For work use, Microsoft Word and Excel programs pre-installed on the device are adequate for preparing short documents.

LIFEBOOK UH574

The Fujitsu LifeBook UH574 allowed for great mobility without being obnoxiously heavy or clunky. Its twelve hours of battery life did not disappoint.

The screen was particularly good. It is bright and visible from most angles, however heat is an issue, particularly around the Windows button on the front, and on the back where the battery housing is located.

STYLISTIC Q702

My first impression after unboxing the Q702 is that it is a nice looking unit. Styling is somewhat minimalist but very effective. The tablet part, once detached, has a nice weight, and no buttons or switches are located in awkward or intrusive positions.
