Oppo may be best known for its high-end Blu-ray and Hi-Fi systems, but the Guangdong-based company is now attempting to make an impact in the smartphone market. Its latest effort is the curiously named Find 5, a high-end Android phone with a 5in, full HD display.

The Oppo Find 5 is certainly an interesting looking product. It's large 5in display means it will compete directly against Samsung's popular Galaxy Note devices but it will be one of the first smartphones with a full HD 1080p display to launch in Europe and other international markets.

Described by Oppo as "this year's most mysterious and anticipated mobile product", the Find 5's screen is certainly capturing plenty of attention. The large 5in display means it will compete directly against Samsung's popular Galaxy Note and Galaxy Note II devices, often described as a cross between a smartphone and a tablet.

What sets the Oppo Find 5 apart from the Galaxy Note II, however, is its 1080p IPS touchscreen. The resolution of 1080x1920 gives it a huge 441ppi pixel density and makes it one of the first smartphones to use a full HD display. HTC's 5in Butterfly was the first phone to use a full HD screen, but it was only released in Japan. A US-exclusive model called the HTC Droid DNA spawned from that, but the Oppo 5 will become the first full HD smartphone to launch in Europe and many other international markets.

Oppo says it spent plenty of time crafting the Fine 5's design, so it's not all about the display. It combines a thin 3.25mm bezel, a black chrome-plated stainless steel front-frame and a 8.9mm thick squared case. Oppo stresses that the Find 5 uses straight lines and simple shapes that "removes distractions" without compromising on build quality. The design doesn't look too different to many other Android phones on the market based on Oppo's press images, so we'll be keen to put these claims to the test when we get our hands on a review unit.

The Oppo Find 5 has fairly impressive specifications, even by today's standards. It comes with a 13-megapixel rear camera with an f/2.2 aperture and a front-facing 1.9-megapixel camera. Curiously, Oppo says the Find 5 is the world’s first smartphone with hardware supported HDR video recording. The phone will record video at 120fps in full HD quality. In addition, the camera on the Find 5 can capture 100 photos at 5 per second using a burst mode.

The Oppo Find 5 is powered by a 1.5GHz Qualcomm APQ8064 quad-core processor and has a hefty 2GB of RAM. However, there's only 16GB of internal memory and no microSD card slot to expand that, so users who long for lots of onboard storage will be left disappointed. The phone will come pre-loaded with Google's Android 4.1 'Jelly Bean' operating system and appears to be skinned with an Oppo UI overlay, but there's no further information on any additional software features Oppo has included.

The Oppo Find 5 isn't a 4G device, but it will work on all Australian 3G networks and will support HSPA+ dual channel speeds used Down Under by Telstra. It also comes with NFC connectivity and Oppo will sell a range of NFC SmartTags with preset actions. The Find 5 doesn't come with a HDMI-out port, but it supports Wi-Fi Display and DLNA technology.

Perhaps the most important feature of the Oppo Find 5 will be it's 2500mAh lithium-ion battery. You can expect its 5in, full HD display to use plenty of power, so we can only hope the battery is good enough to at least get through a full day of use. Samsung uses a 3100mAh battery in its 5.5in Galaxy Note II smartphone, so it will be interesting to determine if Oppo's 2500mAh battery is enough.

The Oppo Find 5 is set to launch in early 2013 across "selected markets" and is likely to be launched in Australia in the coming months.

I loved the BDP-103, so I'm hoping that Oppo can come out with another brilliant product. If the Find 5 performs well, and the Oppo skin for Android isn't too intrusive, I might just buy one of these instead of a Nexus 4.

From Oppo's website, the burst mode can take 100 photos at 5 per second, not 100 in 5 seconds (although 25 in 5 seconds is still fairly impressive).

According to a photo from Oppo's Facebook page, the Find 5 will be available in Australia.
