Bought a DEFY yesterday because we travel west a lot and the salesman said it will work anywhere, also I want an internet connection for my laptop. Haven't been able to connect to the internet at all although the laptop can "see" the phone. This morning the battery was dead flat after 12 hrs off the charger. Waiting for the screen to crack next! Why oh why didn't I buy an Iphone? At least my ancient Nokia still works like the day it was born. Good luck suckers. John

Great and reliable phone. Gorilla glass lived up to its promise after constantly falling out my pocket and getting wet on the job. The original android os sucked but its rockin now with moto froyo update. Battery life is great if u know how to properly adjust user settings. Also, it comes with a lot of useless bloatware, so if you want to make the phone hit its true potential, do some homework and mess around with the user interface and mod some actions. it works great with the new flash player and hardly any lag. Only people complaining are probably the ones wanting a huge brick of a phone or those that don't know much about mobile software.

Have to agree with most of you. The screen freezes. Starts and stops when it pleases. The list goes on. Don't buy it. This is the third time it has been in to be repaired and I'm to get it back tomorrow so will see what apps they've downloaded this time to get it to work properly.

I've had my phone since January and it cracked today. I dropped it many times and only one minor scratch. But trust me, when it cracks, its a big one. My phone went from almost looking 'brand new' to 'totally effed up'. If you get it, definitly recommend a screen protector and case.

DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!! I m in construction and the defy couldnt take one drop from about 6 feet. the screen was shattered. On top of that, it freezes without warning, the sync time is terrible, its freakin slow as hell. The book that comes with it says clearly that the manufacturer has a one year warranty on crackes screens. They refuse to replace it. I will not waste my money on another Motorola product again.

Cons
!! speaker broken, dust cap doesn't fit, receptivity rating downgraded, broken mocrophone jack
• • •

my partner and i bought them in jan. by early march, both speakers stopped working-only on speaker phone.got a message from our provider-'the phone you bought especially to use in remote areas does not have the receptivity required, the new batch's antenna is too small-motorola is solving this problem, be patient' in OCTOBER i got jack of waiting, spent weeks on the phone, got nothing but a month of free calls and cancelled 24m contract (YES-after ombudsman support) now, the new defys are being built with bigger antenna, our cancelled contract means we go get a new one, just have to pay a higher monthly price, they changed plan structures. both motorola and telstra incredibly rubbish customer service-their hold music reduces me to tears of frustration.

Pros
Telecommunications Ombudsman
Cons
Telstra
• • •

I agree with the comment about contacting Telstra - ALWAYS ask for "complaints". However, as I found out, after months of trying to sort serious mistakes on their part, despite them SOUNDING helpful (and genuinely trying to be) there are too many different departments that don't seem to connect well. if no joy, go DIRECT to the TELECOMMUNICATIONS OMBUDSMAN for a CASE NUMBER. You will then immediately get a case manager from Telstra to sort things out. The only way. Also with Optus.
I had a Defy, through optus. No probs with phone until lost it! I liked it better than HTC desire due to size for one handed use.Not able to use as wifi hotspot tho, like Desire

They had the right concept with this phone too bad nothing works on it. My has been back to be repaired 2 times in the last 6 weeks and is going back again today. The phone is constantly freezing, types on its own and opens & closes everything froms messages to apps to dialler without even having to press anything. Worst phone I've ever had the misfortune of owning, and still stuck with 14mths left on the contract!!

My speaker has stopped working and so I can't hear the phone ringing or anyone on the other end unless I have it on loud speaker. Motorola Defy ...It's a total LEMON! Don't be the next victim!
Within the first month I had it back to the who gives a rats Telstra shop I purchased it from (Brisbane City) with multiple soft ware malfunctions. Was repaired twice & the 3rd time I was told it tested ok?! Was that because after the 3rd strike they had to replace the phone & let me out of the contract??
I purchased it because I'm a tradesman who needed a shock-proof, water resistant mobile with a scratch proof screen. So far that's the only thing surprisingly that's lived up to the sales hype.
Its never performed well - freezes up regularly, can't save Contacts on the sim card & the phone hard-drive so when you put it in for repair you loose all your contacts, constant task command malfunctions, often I can't answer my incoming calls as it does not respond when pressing or sliding my finger over the green answering key. Telstra must love this as you are forced to watch the call go to voice mail & have to pay the costs of calling message-bank to get the call you couldn't answer to then ring the caller! Consistently have to shut the phone down, remove the battery to reboot it. Just a very poor performer best left on the retail shelf unless you are a self loather who constantly loves feeling frustrated & who has access to a good, cheap therapist. Still on the positive my screen hasn't cracked yet. Such is my frustration levels the phone has been well & truly crack tested!

Bought my son a Motorola Defy for Christmas 2010 - supposed to be the best and nearly unbreakable. What a mistake that was. Since then it has been back to Telstra 4 times and after threatening with the Onbudsman the agreement was cancelled and he received a new phone (mind you the plan went from $49.00 per month to $79.00 per month).
When his phone was sent away, he was given a "loaner". The following day my son returned with the loaner and advised Telstra that he could not hear on the phone, except by using the earpiece. Also the camera did not work. He was given the brush off. Whilst waiting for his phone to return, he put up with this, but about 2 weeks later, he sat his phone on a table and hear a "crack". Upon investigation he found that the screen on the phone had cracked across the face from one corner to the other. Telstra advised that he is responsible for replacement and quoted between $400 - $800. What a joke! Also, the phone connected to the internet randomly and we had to contact telstra to disconnect. It also called people at random continuously, so for those people with pre-paid, that's where your money is going. If there is a class action against Motorola count me in!

I have had my defy for now 9 Months , I had it 2 days , and it had to go back for repairs , not holding a charge , lost my contacts , Motorola had the phone for 3 weeks , telstra provided a spare Old crap phone , for my use , would not replace the new one , Defy came back with a new bill of health saying nothing wrong with it , it then suddenly held a charge and performed marginally , since then have been contacted that the phone has roaming issues and does not comply to the blue tick , (direct contact from motorola) they will not supply a new phone , they will swap for a re-furbished defy , or keep mine until refurbed (3 to 4 weeks ) since then I have dropped it once for a smashed screen (which was supposed to be shock proof) so its get it fixed or purchase a new phone , and as the screen is not covered by warranty , it looks like wait until my plan is up and get a new phone , in the mean time use an old flip phone , no joy from telstra and no joy from motorola , its the last motorola I will ever own , and I have had motorolas sinces 1986

I received this phone as a gift for mother's day and within a week it began to freeze up. I have to consistently take the battery out to re-boot it. I called my cell provider and they said they would be happy to replace it if necessary. Right after the phone call, my son dropped it in the street-He's 3 so it only dropped about 2-3 feet and the screen cracked. I don't know what to do now and I am afraid they won't fix the original problem now. Not very happy with this phone that is supposed to be so strong!

I got the Motorolla Defy on a plan from telstra being told it was so much better than the Iphone. HMMMM what a load of @#*%. I have had it 6 months, three times back for repair because of an echoing problem. 2nd time in for repair they told me it had a cracked screen, even though it wasn't cracked when it went in for repair, so wouldn't fix under warranty until I paid $102. Complained to telstra and they agreed to reduce my next bill by the amount of the repair. Got back, same problem, sent away again, got it back today, same problem. Been told it works fine but three of my friends have rung and said the echoing problem is still there. I am up for any class action concerning this mobile handset.

After 5 weeks my screen cracked while in my front jeans pocket-so not so tough & now won't be dust or moisture proof. After 14 weeks when people call in, I can't hear them except on speaker phone or car speaker. Telstra also took away the blue tick for rural reception which we wanted for remote Australia travel. They aren't interested in fixing the other problems, but will replace it under the blue tick plan....but there are no other phones we'd have by choice. I'd say stay away form the Defy - it certainly isn't tough and I know screen & ear speaker are common problems after a short time.

This crack screen issue is making me very uneasy with this phone.
I have this phone from last 2 month the problem is while phone sleeps it shutdown itself, to turn it on again I need to pull the battery out and put it back again, this is very frustrating.

I have talked with motorola helpline and sent them the phone to correct this problem, but after three weeks they send me back the same phone with a note that this phone is fine. But phone continues to have the same problem.

I think I will never buy another motorola product again.

Initial opinion was great as it was a compact phone with heaps of features. Sadly the feature promises did not meet what was advertised.

The phone can only be enabled with a connection to Motoblur. Which means that if you put in a SIM the phone has to have access to the internet to grant access if you get a Motoblur a/c. This means that you are totally dependent on a Motoblur server somewhere to use your phone.

Secondly it claims to be able to sync contacts. What they dont tell you is that you can only sync music, movies and photos directly from your PC. If you want to update contacts you need to save them in .csv form, upload them to a server on the internet then suck them onto your phone. Somehow someone thought this was ok to do. Security? Privacy?

I took it back to my provider and got an HTC Desire which is brilliant.
