Not able to play video on PC (MTS files)

There is a problem in that video is not recognised on the PC with Windows software, (MTS files). This is a major problem for the less tech savy people of the world, and a easy solution has not been found yet to a problem that should not be there. I was not told of this when purchasing a camera.
