I bought what I thought was a good quality printer to use while at university. 6 months in I had the 6C10 error and it had to be repaired, timing was terrible (just before exams) but at least it was fixed under warranty.

I'd give it a much higher rating despite the break down and despite the occasional amazingly long delay in printing (up to a few minutes while it makes up its mind) if it weren't for the issues I have with ink consumption.

Unfortunately for this little printer it is unburdoned by a "use black ink only" setting, and as a fairly unhelpful individual from Canon explained, since PDF documents are seen as "images" by the printer, rather than hammering the high capacity black cartridge when it's printing 20 pages of journal articles, it's actually mixing colours to make black. Hurrah!

Smart huh? No, not at all. I have had this printer for 18 months and have yet to print a single photograph, or more than a few words of colour. And yet I've been through 4 sets of colour cartridges which as you can imagine has cost a small bloody fortune. I've started printing at uni instead because it's just costing too much to print a PDF from home.

Canon's response to the above problem was more or less "Suck it up".

It's really hard to find fault with this printer. The purchase cost was low and I have found the running costs to be very reasonable. Excellent quality photo printing and fast and clear plain text. Great scanner. Wireless. Card slots. Duplex printing. CD printing. What more could you want?
The ink refills are reasonably priced compared to other printers. My only advice is not to change the ink cartridges when you see the warning that they are running low or even empty. I have found with my low-medium volume printing that they are good for an extra 2-3 weeks before they actually run out.
It's true that it did take some time and concentration to get this product set up and connected initially. My advice, take the time and follow the instructions carefully - it's worth it.

    NO BW PRINTING!!!

THis is an unbelievable scam to suck your money dry DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!!!!!! There is NO OPTION for Black and White printing only! I've never before encountered this on a printer. So even if you only want to print pages of text, you will waste money refilling ALL the colour cartridges for this ridiculous machine to work
Don't fall for their BS, and SPREAD THE WORD- they shouldn't be allowed to do this

Canon MP640 worst printer and probably rest of the new ones, I have noticed when you print like 3 CD prints the printer every so many minutes goes off on its own doing noises like when you first start it up, drives me insane then goes off for 5 to 10 min like it doing a large clean of ink tanks, what l have noticed is this is how canon uses up ink, because l had full tanks when l bought it and only printed black text on dvds and did no color, but after it keeps doing cleaning heads and ink and goes off on its own doing thing and you cannot stop it unless l pull the plug on it, it ran out of all my color without me printing any color, this is how they make you go buy more ink and where they make there money, if you have a newish canon just keep an eye on it you will see what l mean, l have had canons for a long time but no more.

    Greyscale uses colour, expensive ink.

This printer works well if you keep the ink tanks full.
Extremely disappointed with the rate of colour consumption for greyscale printing. Give me the option of monochrome, some of us don't want your composite black.

I'm ok if the supplied cartridges are only half full but that's so handy to know. I'll get some more of the kind I use and hope I get the paper jam sorted quickly!

I bought this printer thinking if I spent a bit more money on a decent printer rather than a bottom end ink jet I would get a very reliable, quick and easy to use printer that could be used on my wifi network. What I got was a big bulky machine that took at least 30 minutes for the drivers to install. After installing the drivers I realised you could not use the printer on WIFI unless you install the drivers again with WIFI configuration - you cant have both USB and WIFI! only one or the other! After the drivers (USB) were installed my computer got spammed up with cannon software which would be fine if any of it was actually usefull. Its frustrating enough to find the correct sofware and buttons to scan let alone to scan at a certain resolution. The microsoft wizards are much easier. After finally printing a few pages and a photo I can say the quality of the print out and photo was quite good. Scanning on this machine is a bit slow but otherwise easy to use.

Note: Iv just purchased a $40 samsung laser printer. drivers only took a minute to install and I didnt get spammed with software. Very Very easy to use in comparison.

This printer is awesome its got everything. a screen, etc. its like a computer that can do all the printing jobs that a normal printer can do but more. Only thing is that if you check out this page you would find that the included ink tanks are only half filled and i will soon confirm that because i sent an email to canon asking them if the ink tanks are fully filled. if you would like to found out more just send an email to: nicholasapapbologna@gmail.com

I am seriously disappointed with this machine. Only after 6 months from buying it the machine starts to show error 6C10 on its screen failing to print, copy or scan.
