So HP designed a product that doesn't work and is refusing to refund people's money? Consumers are just supposed to eat $400 of their own money and HP goes on like nothing happened? Sounds like a class action lawsuit.

Worst printer ever. HP should be ashamed of themselves. Wireless function never works and the cartridge system is a shameless moneygrab on the backs of once-loyal consumers. The software they provide with it is awful, complete with needless browser toolbars and constant redirection to their online store. HP has taken the easy, reliable process of desktop printing and turned it into an incredibly painful experience designed to separate consumers from their money. Fail. Someone needs to rethink printing and do better than this - Apple?

I got a new computer-Wind 7- and a verizon mifi
This printer will not see the mifi (router) We have
tried everything. I am ready to delete virus program
to see if that could be the issue. Just can not get
the wireless printer to work wirelessly. I liked the
printer for the wireless reason, photo printing, fax
and scan. Can not do any of it.

    Life of printer reasonable.
  • Cons
    Speed of printing and scanning.

My printer lasted 2 years and 9 months, so reasonable life span. Printer does a lot of warming up before printing which can be frustrating. Also scanner was very slow. Agree it shakes a lot too.

    The C309

The c309 is the only printer I have ever owned that is pure JUNK. I will not even use it as a door stop. Quality and HP are not synonymous! This printer has completely isolated HP from me for any potential future purchases. I have had six different HP printers and never experienced as many problems before. Rubbish is the only use for this printer.

After having this unit for two years, I have finally decided to give up, even after the hundred hours or so of trying to get this unit to work. Wifi doesn't work. It printed photos right one day. Scanner works only intermittently. The ink alone will bankrupt you, and apparently, per HP support, it will only work with Name brand ink AND PAPER. The copy quality, when you can actually get it to print, even if only in black and white, is horrible. I will not even donate this unit to a non-profit. It will take too much time and money to try to make it work. I am DONE with HP.

This printer should have been recalled!

I've had this printer (c309a) for at least a year of frustration now, and decided to look at the reviews for the product. I'm actually glad that it's not just me ... everytime I need to print something I need to turn the printer off, unplug it, turn it back on and pray that it works. Sometimes it does, and other times it doesn't. I had a much cheaper Canon before this which lasted for several years, and I never had a problem with it. I'm going back to Canon. HP, you must know how screwed up this product is, so you should have been proactive and recalled it and taken it off the shelf!

This printer sucks. It worked well for a few weeks. Being a casual user, when I went to print just a text document several weeks later, the ink was "empty" (dried out?). Bought new ink. A few months later, same thing. Sorry, this printer is an ink scam. I'm taking the entire printer--as is, don't know if it's working normally or not ("normally" meaning "suck"), and throwing it in the trash.

Buyer beware - wish I had read reviews before I bought. Wireless stopped working after warranty expired (per reviews - this is fairly typical). Then I decided to print up a program for my daughters violin recital. I got some neat paper with a dark border and the printer would only print in it in cyan (print the same document on plain paper and it came out black). Eventually managed to get it to print in black, but then it moved the text a couple of inches down the paper. an hour later I finished up my print job and have made a vow to never spend money on an HP product again.

  • Cons
    Functionality

Had an HP Deskjet all-in-one for years. At 10,000 copies, the feeder died. So I got a new one from Costco. Went against my intuition for an Officejet and got this one.
Huge mistake. It's just over a year old. It has eaten up more print cartridges than imaginable (even on grayscale printing with light ink) and now all we git is "head alignment failure". It's shot. HP even says so. we're lucky if we got 250 pages out of it (it's been non-functional most of the year we've had it).
Never could get the WiFi to work. I am an advanced PC user too. A waste of investment in the hardware and so trying on my patience.
I'm giving it away for parts on FreeCycle, although my preference would be to take a sledgehammer to it (petty, maybe; satisfying, absolutely). I wouldn't sell the POS; that would be unfair to someone else.
I will likely NEVER buy HP again. Probably stick to Canon.

  • Pros

    Everything!

I am on the second HP C309A now and I am only 13 months into this. Got a warranty replacement because the wireless radio went out in the first one and HP made me pay for the shipping! Then they suggested I get an extended warranty on the replacement because it came with only the remaining warranty on the first one, so that was another $45.00! I continuously have to re-establish the connection to the network to print wirelessly from my laptop. I have spent countless hours on the phone with HP (India)because of paper mismatch errors when trying to print envelopes. The last time I got into a shouting match with the poor guy because I told him to just send me a printer that works--he said he could not until we trouble-shooted the printer again. How may times do I need to trouble shoot this thing before HP just decides to replace everyone's C309A with a model that works? This thing takes forever to start up, is full of noise, the Xl cartridges seem to last no longer than the others and I have never been unhappier with an HP product as I am with this one. I still need to call them back but I don't have enough time in the day to sit on the phone while they run me through all the things I went through already. They have installed so many copies of this device on my PC that I am not even sure which one to use anymore! Going to look at a Cannon I fear.

I have not been able to use this printer wirelessly whatsoever. The interface is so overly complex it's just trying to do too much. I want to turn on, hit print, done - not walk through 10 options EVRY TIME before it does something. I am so disappopinted with this printer our family will strictly avoid HP in future. BTW Bluetooth and wireless both do not work. I can pair the device, but it continues to give printing erroes and prints out ascii garbage EVERY TIME. I HATE HP NOW!

I have now had my printer changed by HP twice and now after an automated upgrade (silly, I know) the printer software does not recognise that it is supposedly able to print onto CDs - the message is that the c190a is not capable ... so why does it have the CD tray ? and speaking to HP is a waste as they will not help as the thing is out of warrantee - it is their fault and they are not willing to accept their mistake. I will never be buying a HP again and I have told everyone close enough to listen to buy Canon or Brother or anything but HP.

This is the sorriest piece of equipment I have ever purchased. Does not print on demand, waiting endlessly to get items needed immediately. Good for just copying item but useless when connected to PC. I threw mind in the trash and chalked it up for the worst engineering I have ever encountered. I will not ever in this lifetime buy another HP product. I replaced with Cannon PXMAA 880 and it works like a printer should---Instantly! when printing from PC. Constant replacement of ink cartridges with HP a big negative. Also when cartridges start getting a liitle low --C309 just shuts down and you have to replace or you can't finish project

Biggest piece of junk that I have ever bought. Looks great but as a printer it struggles with even the simplest thing like printing photos. Needs to be reset every time you need to print. Spent an hour trying to print one photo tonight on HP photo quality paper that it simply refused to recognise, but it did print when the paper was inserted incorrectly. Thankfully I still have my old Brother 5040 B&W Laser which never misses a beat.

I will NEVER buy another multi function printer from HP. This one has made me mad EVERY time I've tried to use it since I purchased it nearly three years ago. The BlueTooth function causes my laptop to have the "blue screen of death". The wifi goes offline daily for no apparent reason and requires reboot of both the laptop and the printer. The printer tray indicates empty when it has several sheets left in it. I get error messages all the time. It takes three or four tries to get it to scan. So far the only quality that I see is that photo quality is good, not excellent, but good. I sure expected much more for a printer that cost so much!

I have had this printer for approx 18 months and the wireless radio also went out. After an hour of trouble shooting with HP tech support, they told me it was dead & that I needed a new one. Very disappointed with such a poor product and the lack of parts or repair options. Sad that we are in such a disposable society that we are expected to purchase a new $300 printer every 18 months!! The printer was sold to me with Vista-64 bit, which I found out it was not compatible with afterwards. The printer is also very loud & sounds like it is grinding a pound of hamburger before each print that it painstakingly prints out!! I'm going back to Canon on Epson!! MUCH better products!!

Please do not waste your money on this dreadful product. I bought one less than a year ago and have today put it out with the trash, and am off to buy a Canon MG8170.

Where do I start. It's slow to start, slow to use and is very noisy, making some unedifying noises as it warms up. The paper feed often screws up simple A4 paper. The scan and copy functions are hit and miss (i.e. I found out by trial and error that to copy small items such as a driving licence, it will only work if you cover the licence with a blank sheet of A4 - otherwise the printer sits there saying it is copying but doing nothing).

The ink cartridges need replacing frighteningly often and the wifi connection sometimes works and sometimes doesn't - with no obvious problem.

To be fan the print quality is not bad, but overall my blood pressure cannot withstand another day of trying to use this printer, so out it goes!

I can't believe this product is actually for sale anywhere. I am so dis-satisfied with it and tech support. It guzzles ink (photo black & color when the default is set to black & white), it shakes and rattles to the point of raising the dead, it is slow, and my purchased extended warranty isn't good enough for tech support to help me with my current problem (it prints blue from a couple of my internet programs and websites), unless I pay for it. So, I'll use this one until I can save for a different brand. I will not recomend this to anyone.

    c309a wireless range

I had this issue (endlessly searching for network...) when I moved my C309a printer from the room with the wireless router. It still couldn't find the network when I took it back in the room with the router. After an hour on the phone with HP tech support trying to sell me another printer, it occurred to me that maybe the printer needed to be connected to a computer via the usb port. Did that. Got a message saying something about 'not compatible'. I clicked ignore. Then I went through the wireless setup wizard steps on the printer and viola! I'm printing wirelessly from computers all over the house. The only issue is, the signal for the C309a is so weak in its new location (about 50 ft away) until I need to keep it connected to the computer (a MAC 10.6.8, by the way) using the USB in order for all the devices to print wirelessly. Kinda blows because I don't remember seeing the range issue when I bought the thing. Anyway, I hope this helps someone.

    You MUST be Kidding- NOTHING!
  • Cons
    Everything about this printer.

Where do I even start. I bought this computer about 15 months ago as well from JB Hi Fi in Rockhampton. WORST mistake I EVER made.

I bought the computer because it was wifi, it printed photos by chip as well.

It SUCKS the ink and I SWEAR it uses photo ink to print just text on normal paper as well.

I rang about that issue and they wanted to charge me $20 to help me and sent me some shoddy links about how to fix it myself. It's a JOKE!

This is how HP stays in business.

I also had issues with the photo tray not being recognised. If I want to print a photo using photo paper I have to push print and run into the other room and hold the blasted tray in! I rang and again HP told me the same thing, $20 please. Get stuffed! For $400 it should be gold leafed in 24 carat sheets!

PC World WHAT were you THINKING! Your credibility has gone right out the window with this one!

You either didn't spend ANY time with this product or you purely DO NOT CARE about your readers/clients/customers.

I'll be looking else were for my printers and I won't be taking any recommendations from PC World.

DO NOT BUY ANY HP PRODUCTS.

  • Pros
The idea that it can do everything
  • Cons
    The fact that it can't

DO NOT BUY HP IN AUSTRALIA! There are apparently no HP Service Centres here, so if you need a replacement part (as I have just discovered for my less than 1 year old all-in-one multi-function printer) then you are SOL.

I have the 309a series, less than a year old (as previously mentioned) and my alignment was failing, so I submitted my issue online to the HP for Australia website. I entered the serial number and it was confirmed that my product was still under warranty, so it would be replaced with a "refurbished unit" and I would receive an email confirming that shortly. What I received instead was a step-by-step on how to clean my print head, which failed in the end anyway and gave me another error message that had previously not been an issue. So while I could actually use the printer prior to the "remedy", I am now unable to use it at all because I now have a print head problem.

So I called the toll free HP support number rather than continuing to correspond by email. After the typical queries by the tech, he told me what the printer's error message was telling me (I have a print head problem) and he would submit the order, escalate it to his Manager, and once approved, I should have a new print head within 3-5 working days. I explained that I work from home and need my printer. This is when he said that he was sorry, there are no HP Service Centres anywhere in Australia, and "they" were the only ones who had HP print heads. I'm assuming "they" are HP in the US, since that's where HP is based.

And yes, I have always used brand new HP ink cartridges, never refilled or refurbished ones. I am told the print head issue is also what's causing my scanning problem, as I lost the ability to scan 2 months ago.

Did I mention this product is less than a year old? And I just discovered yesterday (while trying to find out where to report my problem) that this model has been discontinued.

Of course.

On the plus side, I absolutely loved it when it was brand new out of the box and it worked properly. That was just a few short months ago...

  • Pros
    It looks pretty
  • Cons
    Rarely works

Such a frustrating printer, made worse by the fact that the geniuses who review these products gave it 4.5 stars. I'm someone who reads reviews and then makes a decision and now I'm wondering why the high marks were given?! It looks pretty and is supposed to have multiple functions, but I have used all of them and it is frustrating to the point of wanting to smash the thing to pieces. The scanner won't scan to the computer, so I have to use a USB and then physically transfer it over. The wireless connection occurs randomly. The inks seem to evaporate once you put them in. Printing takes a decade, as the machine makes SO MUCH noise for ages before actually beginning to print... and then it doesn't print. Walk away and come back? Nothing. Turn it on and off again? Nothing. Give up and try printing something else and then it starts printing the first thing a good 10-15 minutes after you first asked it.
I've had other pieces of technology frustrate me until a logical solution was found. Unfortunately, the only logical solution here is to not buy HP. Pass me that sledge hammer, please.

This printer has been a pain ever since I bought it. It is constantly going offline for no reason and then is difficult to get back. It is slow and klunky. This is a piece of garbage. I can't wait to get rid of it. The photo tray won't recognize when it's loaded, so I try to print from the main tray but it won't let me. everything else

this is a horrible unit. do not go by looks. this is extremely noisy and my whole table trembles. it freezes for no reasons. maintenence is expensive. cartridges, even the XL types, do not last long. in essence, HP is not good for printer. try other brands..lexmark, brother etc

    paper jams, freezes when copying

I'm generally happy with this unit given what I paid for it ($145 after cash back). I'm a light user, only 20 pages per week, plus the odd fax and copy. For me, the ink costs are acceptable, speed is generally fine, and it is a nice looking, if a little flimsy, piece of equipment. I like that it duplexes, and I like the CD/DVD printer option.

There are a few annoyances: getting it to copy after it has gone into sleep mode is impossible, it freezes. I have to restart it. Shutting down and restarting is a slow process that involves a lot of clunking and whirring. Sheet feeding for duplex (2-2 or 2-1 sided) copying tends to result in a jam.

At one stage the wireless connectivity died. After a few phone calls to the friendly HP support guys they sent out a replacement unit.

The included software is acceptable, rather than great.

If I was a heavy user I'd be worried about the robustness of this machine, but for a light user looking for an all-in-one it is fine.

    freezes up and unreliable

Similar issues. HP has swapped out my C309 three times. Always the same problem. I wish they would just say that they are aware of the problem instead of acting as though this is the first that they have heard of the problem.
Every time I print, scan, make a copy or fax I cross my fingers and hope it works. Today they offered to swap it out again if we do the troubleshoot that will take a few hours. I said no! I walked away from the two year warranty that I purchased and threw the printer in the trash. Will never purchase an HP again.

    HP Photosmart c309a

I bought a Photosmart All in One c309a ($400) about 15 months ago. The wireless radio has quit working and am having connecting via an ethernet cord. The printer goes through ink much too fast. Everytime we need to fax or copy, we have to power down and up again or it locks up. I used to be an HP fan, but their products aren't what they used to be. DO NOT BUY AN HP PRODUCT.

My HP photosmart 309a has been a problem since day 1. Problems: (1) does not print anything in pdf file. (2) Starts to fax then stops in the middle of the first page- it won't do the job and won't cancel the job. I have to cut off electricity to the unit before it will "stop" the job. It takes FOREVER to boot back up. (3) Won't shut down when "off" button is pressed. (4) Won't cancel when cancel button pressed. (5) Noisy. Everytime I print it takes about 30 seconds worth of starting up noises. I can print from my other (non-HP printer) in the time the 309a is just trying to warm up. I rue the day I wasted money on this printer. I will never buy HP again.
