Topfield TRF-7170 PVR

A great PVR for digital TV recording, but some of its other features could use modernising

User Reviews:

topfield web site was down for 2 weeks, so no support.

Wireless was impossible to setup, hence so was updating firmware
Of its own accord, it taped over 100 crap shows that I did not program to record
this is so bad, I have now signed up for Foxtel HDIQ so I can record free to air.

this was the worst product I have ever bought

It does a great job of recording given a weak signal
The guide interface for transferring files from the internal to the external USB drive(1TB max?) is limited to one program at a time

The external drive needs to be formatted correctly and if not done properly it affects the names it will happily transfer for instance it does not like ':'. So I have to rename the files.
I want to transfer a group of files - it does not support this.
If I copy to the external USB drive and it wants to rename the file - fine just delete the ':'automatically.
I code in C so maybe I should just write some TAP code to do that.
I would rather re-write the TOPFIELD CODE,
The older TOPFIELDS had simple video editting built in. WHat happened to that feature.
The Intelliegent recording feature does not realise what the program name is - it starts early and uses that info instead. The IR feature seems to have bug in it - I find recordings for the same time and channel but that show may have moved. I porefer to find the recording telling you it wanted to record something or checking the same channel for the same show name.

Lots of features
bad interface

Feature rich but the user interface is non intuitive and clumsy. Not for Granny or even a frequent user that isn't into linux(?) programming and TAPs.

First impression on unpacking the Q702 test unit was the solid feel and clean, minimalist styling.

For work use, Microsoft Word and Excel programs pre-installed on the device are adequate for preparing short documents.

The Fujitsu LifeBook UH574 allowed for great mobility without being obnoxiously heavy or clunky. Its twelve hours of battery life did not disappoint.

The screen was particularly good. It is bright and visible from most angles, however heat is an issue, particularly around the Windows button on the front, and on the back where the battery housing is located.

My first impression after unboxing the Q702 is that it is a nice looking unit. Styling is somewhat minimalist but very effective. The tablet part, once detached, has a nice weight, and no buttons or switches are located in awkward or intrusive positions.
