Predicting Wi-Fi performance: Can it be done? 19/09/2008 09:57:00

To begin with, additional budget allocations should be made to allow for unforeseen coverage or capacity issues.
Whenever I plan and configure an enterprise WLAN system, I always advise that an additional 10 to 20 percent of the capital budget be reserved for expansion and filling in holes in coverage or capacity that couldn't be anticipated during the planning process.

Online poker cheating demonstrates insider risk 18/06/2008 15:55:02

Poker cheats are using insider knowledge to gain competitive advantage.
When determining the risk to a system and the data stored on it, insider threats are generally regarded as lower risk. Despite the complete access (high risk) that insiders generally have, most of the time insiders are trusted agents (very low risk) on the network. When it breaks down, it can break down in a catastrophic manner, especially if there is money at stake.

    Wi-Fi wants to be free 18/02/2008 09:40:08

Wi-Fi used to be a resource for rent, now it's the new toaster.
Public Wi-Fi hot spots have been popular for about eight years. During that time, companies providing the service have been groping about, trying to figure out how to monetize it. The dominant model to date has been to simply charge for it. Pay us US$20 a month, and you can log in at any of our many locations.

Opinion: The Technology Coming to a Gadget Near You 21/12/2007 06:53:07

The connected home, smartphones should start to boom in 2008
When it comes to the "next big thing", I'm usually pretty skeptical. (It's from all those years I've spent trying to get gear to work as advertised.) But in 2008, we will see some long-promised technologies - like the connected home, truly smart "smartphones", and environmentally friendly tech - start to bloom. And even if they don't live up to all the hype, they'll make life a lot more interesting.

Do video games make kids violent, stupid and sick? 03/12/2007 07:39:42

Suddenly, video games are blamed for a long list of social ills
Video games have occasionally served as a convenient scapegoat for whatever ails youth. But just this week, the normal trickle of blame has become a torrent, with loud proclamations from many quarters that computer games are making kids violent, stupid and sick.

    Review: Sony's flash-based notebook -- a road warrior's dream 28/11/2007 10:41:05

What's notable about this almost-weightless workhorse is that there's no traditional platter-spinning 2.5-in. hard drive
Sony Electronics' Vaio TZ191N notebook proves that good things do come in small packages. Inside the black carbon-fiber case is an Intel Centrino Duo processor (a 945GMS chip running at 1.2 GHz) with a bus speed of 533 MHz, 2GB DDR2 SDRAM and a double-layer DVD writer. The 11.1-in. WXGA active-matrix TFT color LCD screen (1,366 by 768 resolution) is amazingly sharp and drew oohs and ahhs from colleagues. In terms of size and weight, it's a road warrior's dream: It measures 10.9 in. wide by 7.8 in. deep by 1 in. high and weighs in at a mere 2 lb. 10 oz. (with battery) or 3 lb. 6 oz. (if you throw the power cord into your travel bag).

U.S. ISPs keep a close eye on what Google has planned should it bid on the 700Mhz spectrum
Is it just me, or did we all miss something truly big in the recent Google-FCC fandango?

Rethinking wireless LAN packet loss 02/08/2007 11:51:03

Just how big a problem is wireless packet loss?
We all know that there are trade-offs when using wireless communications. We would never tolerate the quality of our cell phones on land lines and we know that our wired Ethernet connections have better raw throughput than wireless.
