Acer has made a valid attempt at creating a monster of a PC in an Alienware-like vein, but ultimately, its attempt falls short because the high-end model doesn't include options for the latest in memory and graphics technology.

This PC has a user-friendly case and the latest CPU technology, and it doesn't look too bad. It's aimed at gamers, content creators, video editors and just about anyone who has demanding uses for their PC.

Not everyone will like the appearance of the Aurora ALX, but there's no denying that it's a powerful machine that will please most serious gamers. We like its design and construction. Although it's not a perfect PC, we think it's a worthy machine for those who can afford to splurge on it.

With its generous software bundle and great mouse, this is a superb system. Shame you'll have to remortgage the house to buy it, then spend even more on some essential features.

It's not the best performer in its price range and there's some limitation on its upgradeability. Even with a TV tuner, the price just doesn't compare to what many other systems offer.

The Altech Tornado eXtreme is an enthusiast's PC without a doubt. If you want to play the latest games and run taxing applications, the Altech NRG Tornado eXtreme is a great choice, despite its high price tag.

If you're a serious gamer, you need a serious machine — and a serious wallet. This $5011 Altech NRG PC is about as serious as they come. It's beautifully built, has a GeForce GTX 280 SLI graphics card configuration and plenty of straight-line speed thanks to its overclocked quad-core CPU.

The CPL Core i5 750 desktop PC is well built, fast and looks reasonably menacing. It can be used for gaming as well as office work and video editing and it has plenty of room for expansion. For $1710, we think it's a pretty good buy.

The Dell XPS 720 is a little hard to judge. One can't help but admire the effort Dell has put into its design and construction, yet by the same token, its a little awkward and the construction is excessive. It sure does look good though, so if you're after a machine that will be used for gaming, or even 3-D and video rendering applications, then it's worth considering.

Not only is this system versatile and powerful, but is reasonably quiet and has been pitched at a fair price. It will be an effective media centre, play the latest games, run any Office or antivirus programs you might need for personal and work situations, and is Vista capable when you decide to make the switch. Added storage may be necessary for some.
