Overall, despite the Pentax K2000's stellar image quality and what the company has done to make this model appealing and easy to use, it is difficult to recommend the K2000 wholeheartedly due to its focusing shortcomings.

We can't wait to get Panasonic's Lumix DMC-GF1 digital SLR camera back in our lab for some more in-depth tests. But our initial impressions are good, and this model could be the one to cement the reputation of the fledgling Micro Four-Thirds system.

The Nikon D3000 isn't designed to 'wow' people, but instead to teach people. It's a digital SLR camera with in-built guides that can help novices select the appropriate shooting mode and settings depending on the style of photo they want to take. It's image quality is good overall, but it's no match for a mid-range D-SLR.

If you're after a petite SLR then the Olympus E-420 is a solid performer. It keeps pace with the competition in most areas, while maintaining dimensions that are significantly smaller.

The Nikon D40 is a great entry level SLR, and a good competitor to Canon's EOS 400D. It captures high quality pictures, has speedy operation and great low light performance, making it a wonderful choice for the budding enthusiast.

Another wonderful entry-level camera from Canon, the 1000D combines all the latest features — including Live View, dust reduction and lens-based stabilisation — with superb picture quality to produce an extremely appealing package.

Olympus' E-520 is a great D-SLR that is more than capable of competing with the big guns from Canon and Nikon. Its images are impressive and the feature set is robust enough to satisfy all but the most demanding photographer.

The best entry level SLR we've used, the D40x narrowly edges out offerings by Canon and Sony. It combines extremely speedy operation, great quality images and an excellent design to make a wonderful, all purpose camera.

While some competing units may be better for more advanced users, Sony's Alpha A300 is a compelling option for first-time SLR buyers with its combination of image quality, features and an intuitive menu.

The entry-level Pentax K-m digital SLR is built to a high standard, with features rivalling more expensive models from competitors. The bundled 18-55mm lens is nothing special, but overall the Pentax K-m is a great SLR for beginners.

If you don't want to fool with interchangeable lenses (or you prefer framing shots with an LCD panel), and you don't need the gee-whiz features found on other advanced models, the S9500 is a good compromise

Pentax's K200D may not quite be enough to topple the Nikon and Canon empire in the entry-level SLR space, but it is a very solid alternative. It combines image stabilisation and dust reduction with some impressive images and a great build.

Seeing as the Sony Alpha a330 contains a nearly identical feature set and the same imaging chip as its predecessor, this camera is not worth an upgrade, nor is it hearty enough to take on the latest models from Nikon and Canon. But for consumers new to DSLRs and looking for a camera with advanced features that's easy to tote around, the inexpensive Sony a330 meets its mark. It's very simple to handle - and it offers the added benefit of Live View.
