The elegantly designed FinePix S200EXR megazoom camera has a wealth of unique exposure options for serious photographers.

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX1 is a super-slim camera that packs in a competent image sensor and takes reasonable photos. It's not particularly fast and its high ISO settings introduce significant noise, but it might be a decent camera to take out for a night on the town.

The Canon PowerShot G11 is a good camera, but it's not without its flaws. We wish it had sturdier buttons and that its zoom control was better. Photos are a little soft, but this camera is still capable of capturing some excellent pictures. It's a good choice for users who want full manual control but dislike the idea of paying over $1000 for a digital SLR kit.

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-WX1 is a digital camera that packs new technology into a small and simple body. There are aspects we think could be better but overall the DSC-WX1 is an interesting and sometimes useful compact camera.

The Canon EOS 7D is definitely for the action photographer: It has a fast burst mode and captures huge images. Its high ISO performance is very good, but we found its focus to be hit and miss.

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FS42 is an ultra-affordable compact camera that does the basics well. It might not excel in any one area, but at this price, it's not supposed to. A good choice for skint casual users.

Novice photographers can just set the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FS62R to Intelligent Auto and fire away without worrying about changing settings. It's reasonably priced, too.

The Pentax X70 is smaller and lighter than nearly every other camera in its class--depending on your hand size, that might be either good or bad. Although its diminutive size gives it a slightly fragile feel, I love being able to tuck the camera into my backpack or throw it around my shoulder and hardly know it's there. I'd just make sure I purchased a backup rechargeable battery to tote along with it.

Overall, despite the Pentax K2000's stellar image quality and what the company has done to make this model appealing and easy to use, it is difficult to recommend the K2000 wholeheartedly due to its focusing shortcomings.

Panasonic's LUMIX DMC-GF1-K is a solidly built compact camera that lets you use different lenses. It's capable of capturing beautifully clear images and it's fast. It does have some issues when focusing in dim lighting, and noise is noticeable at high ISO speeds.

We like Samsung's innovative addition of a second screen to the ST550, but this digital camera could be improved. Its battery life is poor, the menu system needs more information, and it could use some more manual controls. However, it can take some good photos and it performs adequately in dim lighting.

Despite some issues with noise, the Ricoh CX2 is an admirable compact camera. It has a huge 300mm lens, captures vibrant and sharp images, has useful scene modes, and is reasonably priced. Put it on your shopping list if you want a point-and-shoot camera with a versatile lens.

The Sony Alpha A380 delivers evenly exposed images with natural colours when left on its default settings. There are further pre-optimised Creative Style settings for those who prefer the more vivid look. We weren't convinced, however, that the supplied kit lens made the best of the sensor's high pixel count, with detail softer than we expected. Couple this with disappointment about the plastic build and lack of video and Sony gets a 'good, but could do better' this time around.

With the exception of its premium price tag, the Canon IXUS 120 IS compact digital camera is pretty hard to fault. It looks amazing and is capable of taking some breathtaking photos. What's more, it will fit in practically any pocket.

Fujifilm's Finepix J30 is a simple to use compact digital camera, but it doesn't have anything to set itself apart from the crowded market of similar point-and-shoot cameras.
