To be fair, the Xacti FH1 is hardly an expensive piece of kit: we think its asking price is fair given the overall still and video quality and the advanced capabilities of the camera. It’s simply that when a product promises Full HD at 1920x1080 and 60fps progressive capture at that, we expect superlative results. The Sanyo Xacti FH1 gives reasonable results and provided us with some memorable footage.

The Sony HDR-XR520 is a rock-solid HDD video camera that improves on its predecessors in nearly every way. On the other hand, it's unlikely that many consumers will be able to afford it at its current price point.

The Canon Legria HF20 is a decent high-definition camcorder with some interesting features on board. Unfortunately, it is trumped by its HF11 sibling; an identically-priced model that offers a superior low-light performance.

The Canon Legria HF S10 is one of those rare camcorders that will please all types of user. It combines beginner-friendly features with in-depth manual controls and produces unmatched video quality to boot. Unfortunately, it's also prohibitively expensive.

When judged on video quality alone, the Panasonic HDC-HS200-K is an excellent camcorder that can match almost anything on the market. Unfortunately, its high price tag coupled with certain hardware omissions has slightly diminished its appeal. Nevertheless, it remains a top-drawer choice for (wealthy) novices.

We liked the variety of shooting options on the ZX1 and its compact yet durable design. We would’ve liked to have seen more on-board memory or the provision of at least a modest SD card in the box, however. And while the footage we took looked good, we found the controls rather fiddly and their purpose not clearly marked. A better zoom would have boosted the good-looking Kodak’s score.
