Although the Nokia N97 dwarfs the iPhone in terms of features, the software doesn't match the standard set by Apple. The N97's flip-up design, keyboard and massive storage capacity are fantastic features, but it needs software upgrades and further development of the Ovi Store to truly become an iPhone challenger. As it stands, it has great potential but feels somewhat incomplete.

Apple’s iPhone 3GS is the best iPhone yet, but we aren’t convinced iPhone 3G owners will find it a worthwhile upgrade, especially considering the free 3.0 software update added plenty of extra features. For potential new iPhone owners, though, the extra speed, increased memory and improved features make the iPhone 3GS an excellent smartphone.

HTC's Touch Pro 2 mobile phone is more responsive and easier to use than its predecessor, but the extra weight and bulk won’t be appreciated by all. A fantastic display, a well-designed keyboard and an excellent user interface may be enough to balance the ledger.

HTC's Magic, available on 3 Mobile, has corrected many faults of the previous Dream, making it an excellent smartphone on the whole. The lack of a 3.5mm headphone jack is disappointing and the Android Market is still in its infancy with no paid apps available, but the Android OS has massive potential.

Motorola's MOTOSURF A3100 is one of the most pleasant to use Windows Mobile devices we've tested. The screen is mediocre when compared to other phones and text entry will frustrate, but the TelstraOne Experience and Moto Homescreen skins make this smartphone intuitive to use.

HP's iPAQ Voice Messenger smartphone wins points for its looks, but it's not all good news. The optical controller is mediocre and the keypad is flat, making an otherwise competent handset frustrating to use.

Nokia's first touch-screen mobile phone, the 5800 XpressMusic is not an iPhone killer but it’s provides a solid building block as Nokia moves into this space. This smartphone packs in plenty of features, but it falls short in terms of usability due to the resistive touch screen and an unorthodox text input method.

It's not a revolutionary product, but Nokia's latest N-Series handset, the N85, is smaller, cheaper and has better battery life than the top-of-the-range N96. If you're after a fully fledged multimedia phone with most of the latest features, the N85 is hard to ignore.

The Touch HD is one of HTC's best efforts yet — its superb display in particular looks outstanding. Unfortunately, it's still not perfect and you'll pay through the nose for its features.

After almost a year of waiting, the XPERIA X1 has finally arrived. It's not the game changing handset that it looked like it would be when it was first announced, but the panel system has its merits and the display and design are first class. Unfortunately, laggy performance is an issue and it isn't cheap.

Beneath this rather underwhelming design is a handset packed with every feature under the sun. The INNOV8 is a true jack of all trades — but unlike many other handsets it performs most of them quite well. If you're after a high-end mobile and aren't fussed if it doesn't have a touch screen then the INNOV8 should be near the top of your list.

The Omnia is Samsung’s attempt at pushing Windows Mobile as far into the background as possible, but it’s certainly not perfect. With more tweaking to the TouchWIZ interface and a bit more speed, this could potentially knock the iPhone off its perch. As it stands though, it's an admirable handset without being outstanding.

If you’re purely after a phone for imaging, then the C905 will be right up your alley. While we’re still waiting for optical zoom, the photos it produces are pretty noteworthy for a camera phone. An excellent design and good build quality are slightly let down by a somewhat sluggish user interface and a proprietary headphone jack.

For heavy text input, the Touch Pro is a much better option than its little brother, the Touch Diamond. There are still plenty of issues, but the sluggish interface has been slightly improved, and removable storage is a welcome addition.

Unlike its predecessor, the N96 isn't revolutionary but it remains a reasonable upgrade to the N95. It’s expensive and the DVB-H feature is useless in Australia, but as a multimedia device it is one of the better mobile phones on the market.
