The TomTom car kit for iPhone works exactly as intended and provides a secure and practical way to mount your smartphone in the car. It’s a little expensive and many will point out that the iPhone's GPS performance should have been better in the first place. However, if you regularly use your iPhone as your primary navigator then it comes highly recommended.

The Laser Navig8r G35 GPS unit is let down by a small, low quality screen and a speaker that isn't loud enough. If you don't care what your GPS looks like, free map updates (with some limitations) and a low price make it seem appealing. However, there are too many issues for us to recommend the G35 as a good buy.

The Mio Moov A350 represents great value for money. While its performance isn't spectacular, it does a very good job for the asking price. If you're on a budget and need a cheap GPS unit that does the basics, look no further.

At just $199, the Navman C40 is certainly cheap and for the most part it does a reasonable job. It is essentially an older GPS unit with updated software, though; Mio's Moov range is a valid alternative at a similar price.

TomTom's Start is the company's cheapest GPS ever, and the good news is that the overall navigation experience hasn't been sacrificed to achieve the low price. Though not perfect, the TomTom start combines a simple, easy-to-use interface and a compact design, making it ideal for first-time buyers.

The Laser Navig8r G43 GPS unit offers plenty of features for a relatively low asking price, but a poor quality speaker, a screen that's hard to see in direct sunlight and keystroke lag diminish its appeal.

The FD-250 has most of the basics and a few extra features that will serve you well, but the lack of responsiveness of the touch screen is an issue.

There are no advanced features like Bluetooth and live traffic updates, but Navman's MY30 still manages to include lane guidance and 3D landmarks. Overzealous school zone alerts, an inconsistent map and an average screen will disappoint.

Kogan's EziNav GPS device is a great option for those who need GPS navigation but don't want to pay an inflated price.

Laser’s Navig8r M35 is one of the best value for money GPS units we've come across. Don’t let its low price fool you: it is packed with features, including detailed mapping data and Australian-accented text-to-speech.

If you need a cheap GPS unit, Kogan's EziNav G3 is a good option. Unfortunately the map interface and some voice directions can be confusing.

Although the eTrex H might suit those hikers who want nothing except the bare minimum, most will find it largely unusable. Inadequate functionality and no base map makes the unit extremely hard to use for anyone except the most experienced hikers, and the slightly more expensive Magellan Triton 200 is probably a better option.

Uniden's TRAX 350 lacks Bluetooth and traffic capabilities, and it has a bland design. However, it offers good value.

Navman's entry-level C series is headed by the C60 -- a cheap GPS unit that offers advanced lane guidance. Essentially this is an older GPS unit with updated software and a different coloured case. If you can spare a few extra dollars, the units in Mio's latest Moov range offer better value.

Uniden's TRAX 353 has a cluttered map screen and a bland design, but it combines a decent set of features and performance for a competitive price.
