This is a new-generation networking kit that will provide fast transfer rates between a server and a receiving device. It's easy to setup and can be connected to receiving devices via a 5GHz-compatible wireless 802.11 draft-n signal or Ethernet. It won't work with existing 802.11g equipment, but that's not a problem if you already have an 802.11g network and just want something to service your media devices and gaming consoles exclusively.

TP-Link TL-WR340G

With a price tag of $39.95, TP-Link's TL-WR340G is an 802.11g wireless router that's perfect for anyone who just wants a simple device with which to start a home network. It's particularly suited to small dwellings.

TP-Link TD-8840

Although some may be put off by the lack of any wireless functionality, the TD-8840 is fine for those on a budget requiring an ADSL2+ modem and home

TP-Link WR541G

All up, this is a terrific little wireless router for an ADSL or cable Internet connection. It's inexpensive, easy to use and has good features. We do wish the Quick Setup process focused on security, too, and we also wish the unit had an on/off switch, for more simple resets.

Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router (WRT54G2)

The WRT54G2 is strictly for those of you who don't need the extra speed that an 802.11 draft-n-based router can provide. Consider it only if you want a basic router that won't be distributed among many devices and long distances.

TP-Link TL-WR741ND

RRP: $114.95

It may only support 802.11n Lite, but TP-Link's TL-WR741ND is a suitable upgrade for anyone still using 802.11g. It can be found for a price between $60-70 online, but if you can afford to spend a few dollars more on an full-blown 802.11n router, you'll get be rewarded with much faster throughput and a greater wireless range.

3 Mobile Wi-Fi Router (D100)

If you really need to share your wireless broadband when you're not out and about, then this is a reasonable, albeit not outstanding solution. Keep in mind that it's only been designed for 3 Mobile subscribers. If you don’t fall into this category, then you’ll need to look at the slightly pricier alternative of a non-carrier specific router that supports USB modems.

Linksys WRT110

It's not quite an 802.11n router, but it will run 802.11n-based adapters at close to 802.11n speed. It looks good, it's easy to use and it was completely reliable throughout our test period. We highly recommend this router if you want something inexpensive with which to stream HD video or a high-speed ADSL2+ connection.

Linksys WRE54G

Solid without being inspiring, the Linksys WRE54G is a decent Wi-Fi extender. There are cheaper alternatives, however.

TP-Link TL-WR841ND

If you need a cheap, close range router that’s 802.11n-capable, then TP-Link’s TL-WR841ND is a viable option. Although its configuration options are somewhat limited, it's quite speedy.

ASUS WL-600g

The WL-600g is affordable and it proved to be a reliable modem and wireless access point, but its user interface needs improvement. The built-in FTP server is a nice touch, but didn't let us write to our NTFS-formatted hard drives.
