The MSI Wind U123T is a fine netbook for travellers, students and TV junkies. It ships with a digital TV tuner that lets you record programs onto the netbook and then watch them while on the road. It's also useful for typing documents, viewing photos and listening to music.

The Dell Inspiron Mini 10 is a great netbook, especially if you want a high resolution, a large amount of storage space and the convenience of an HDMI output. It's let down by the poor digital TV software, slow performance and the awkward touchpad. We also liked the super cool lid artwork!

The Toshiba Satellite A65-S126 is slow and lacks bundled software, but it's still a good choice if a big hard drive and big screen top your priority list.

Despite its flaws, the Kogan Agora Netbook Pro is a reasonable performer for the asking price. If you can get to grips with the open source OS (or have a spare Windows licence handy), it will satisfy as a secondary notebook.

It has been out for a while now, but the original Eee PC is still great value and one of the best super-portable laptops on the market.

This Linux version of the Aspire One is easy to use and has a solid-state drive, but the Windows XP version has better memory and storage capacity for only $100 more. Furthermore, Acer will also release versions with built-in 3G modules. It's really a case of waiting for the new versions to arrive, unless the portability and ease of use of this unit catch your fancy.

Physically, it's the same as the Linux version, and it has less storage space, but it does feel a little faster and it's much better suited to playing videos.

Even if you've never used Linux before, the Linux version of the Eee PC 900 is worth considering. It's more expensive than the Windows XP version, but it does have a larger internal storage capacity, and we feel that it's easier to use.

Physically, the Lenovo IdeaPad S10-2 is a run-of-the-mill netbook without anything to make it stand out from other mini-notebooks on the Australian market. However, it includes a fine implementation of Splashtop, which allows you to use the netbook for Web browsing and other basic tasks without booting into Windows.

Despite its reduced size and resolution, the Lenovo IdeaPad S10e is one of the best netbooks on the market. It's very well built, it has an expansion slot and its battery lasts a long time. Its keyboard is hard to get used to, but some of the people we showed it to loved it.

For its sub-$700 asking price, you can't go wrong with the MSI Wind. It was responsive in our tests, and has plenty of storage and a large screen. Most importantly, its battery lasts a long time. This ultraportable is also quite comfortable to use.
