Those of you with an eye for style will want to check out HP's Mini by Studio Tord Boontje. It features a very nice 3D pattern of flora and endangered animals on its lid, while on the inside it has all the components of a basic netbook. There couldn't be more of a contrast between the bog-standard netbook specifications and the extravagant styling, but there's no law that states simple netbooks can't look good, and the Mini by Studio Tord Boomtje definitely does look good!

A big screen, fast graphics and good hard drive performance are just some of the things to like about HP's first Windows 7-based netbook. It's a great unit for anyone who wants to view high-definition video content while on the go and it's comfortable enough to use for extended periods.

The MSI Wind 12 U200 is bigger and more powerful than a typical netbook, yet it's still small and easy to travel with. We love its keyboard, its battery life is good and its CPU is relatively powerful. Our main complaint is that it's a top-heavy unit, so firm knocks can make it topple backwards, especially when using it on your lap.

We love the screen on the Sony VAIO W and think it's a good netbook overall. However, it needs more RAM and better features to make it worth the high asking price.

Physically, the Lenovo IdeaPad S10-2 is a run-of-the-mill netbook without anything to make it stand out from other mini-notebooks on the Australian market. However, it includes a fine implementation of Splashtop, which allows you to use the netbook for Web browsing and other basic tasks without booting into Windows.

If netbooks are too small for you and regular 15in laptops are way too big, then the HP Pavilion dv2-1132AX could be just what you're looking for. It runs an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Neo CPU, has an HDMI port, and is perfect for office work as well as watching videos and editing photos.

Samsung's NC10 isn't the most attractive netbook on the market, but it's built in 3G wireless broadband capabilities and above average battery life makes it a good road warrior.

The Joybook Lite U121 Eco is a good option for anyone who wants a big netbook with long battery life. It has an 11.6in screen and a mostly full-sized keyboard, and a 6-cell battery. However, its build quality could be better and we'd like BenQ to include options for a 3G module and a solid state drive.

The Aspire One ZG8 with an integrated Next G module is one of the best netbooks on the market. The integrated 3G module means there are no dongles hanging off it, and the overall build quality and style of the netbook is superb. We recommend it for anyone who wants a small laptop to get online anywhere and anytime.

If you're looking for a thin and light netbook, ViewSonic's 1.1kg VNB101 does have some merit, but it also has a few drawbacks. You only get two USB 2.0 ports, its SD card slot is located in an awkward position, and its battery life was short of two hours in our tests. It does look decent, though, and it comes with a version of the Linpus Lite operating system pre-installed, in addition to Windows XP.

The HP Mini 5101 feels more like a regular laptop than a netbook and this is because of its sturdy construction, relatively good speed and excellent keyboard design. Not only that, it looks good and it has a 1366x768 screen. There really isn't too much wrong with this netbook at all, and we think it's probably the best netbook currently available on the market.

As UMPCs go, the Viliv S5 Premium delivers on many of its promises, although the disappointing 3G performance will deter some people and the software keyboard makes it a poor choice for anyone who frequently wrangles Office documents. For this price, you can get a nice, lightweight netbook or even notebook. We recommend checking out the Viliv S5 Premium only if you absolutely must have a 500g Windows PC that works well with Wi-Fi, and you're not expecting to do a lot of typing.

There is no denying the Sony VAIO P Series' portability and style are compelling. However, the Sony VAIO VGNP15GG certainly doesn’t come cheap and performance isn't up to the standard we expected. Still, there is simply no denying its aesthetic appeal and if you want a tiny notebook for travelling, there is plenty to like.

Once we've completed our testing of the Mini 5101, we'll give you a full update and a final score. In the meantime, it's safe to say HP has succeeded in delivering a smarter netbook.

Overall, the superslick Dell Latitude XT2 will make you the envy of the boardroom. It offers most of the bells and whistles you might need, and it runs briskly enough for you to get your work in order. This machine offers more than enough to like--except for maybe the price tag.
