For the vast majority of gamers this card is going to be ideal. Those looking for a super powerful graphics card may have to wait or buy one of the high-end options from the previous series, but the MSI GeForce 9600GT is an excellent choice for decent mid-range gaming.

The MSI GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB is one of the better mid-high performance cards available for its price and fills the gap between the current generation of high-end cards and the eagerly awaited series that's soon to come from NVIDIA. The increased clock speed may not make a huge difference, but it may just be enough for some.

If you can ignore the anomalies we came across in our testing, the MSI P35 Platinum is a fair performer, but not the top of the class. It has some interesting design features and managed to overclock by a reasonable percentage with good stability. Unfortunately some odd inconsistencies make us worry whether this is the right choice.

Aimed very much at the media centre crowd, this motherboard has the features and the passive cooling to make it a hit in the living room. The popularity of media centre systems looks likely to increase in the future, and the 690G chipset could be beautifully positioned to produce some excellent motherboards with just such a market in mind.

The MSI NX8500GT can be summed up as an inexpensive card that's perfect for an entry-level Windows Vista PC, or a media centre PC, but it shouldn't be considered if you want to play current and future games.

The MSI NX8600GT is a decent and affordable mid-range graphics card that's suitable for playing today's games, but it might struggle to run DirectX 10-based games when they're released.

All up, we think this card is great value for money considering the performance it provides. It runs quietly and comes with the cables you need to use all its video ports. It's a good choice if you're after a new-generation card for a mainstream gaming machine.

This board is well designed, for the most part, and has plenty of useful connectivity options. If you want to build a lasting machine for gaming or high-end video and graphics work, then this board will provide a good base.
