The inexpensive Compro VideoMate E700 delivers the digital AV goods with aplomb - given a decent aerial it will display good quality standard definition images. Although the comprehensively featured ComproDTV 3.0 software isn't bad, an MCE-style user interface would be more convenient for ordinary TV viewing.

Far less hassle than adding TV reception to a portable PC, AverMedia's USB radio is a good-value, compact plug-and-play product that extends the entertainment possibilities of your notebook without fanfare.

It's an inexpensive single digital TV tuner, but its software is poor and its build quality could be better.

Users who want to watch digital TV on their PC, as well as record from analogue devices, will be well served by this card. However, its software isn't perfect and picture quality was a little flat.

The U500 is a neat little device that does what it's supposed to and it won't cost you too much. Buy it if you want a device that you can easily plug in to multiple PCs or notebooks. It did struggle to find channels in one of our test locations where the TV signal is weak, so if you're in an area where your current reception is not up to scratch, then this unit may not perform as expected.

Its TV reception isn’t the best, but it does have a useful analog input port and the PowerCinema software media centre adds functionality.

The Pinnacle PCTV nanoStick is not without its quirks, but it remains a fairly decent tuner for the asking price. In optimum conditions it will not disappoint, with the included features boosting its value considerably.

The Volar is handy for a notebook, and it's inexpensive. Its tuner found all the digital channels and displayed them with good signal strength, but it was let down by its software. It needs more convenient time-shifting capabilities and the ability to record HD programs with audio.

This low-priced TV tuner card has some handy features, but overall it's awkward to use.
