Not quite a bargain bin printer, Canon's PIXMA MP490 inkjet multifunction is still a decent impulse buy. It provides decent quality photo and document printing and an easy-to-use interface.

Even for the low initial cost, the Fuji Xerox Phaser 3100MFP monochrome printer underperforms. Its low running cost and ability to print Sudoku grids aside, there are a few too many shortcomings to warrant the cost of this multifunction.

The mid-range Canon PIXMA MP560 inkjet multifunction printer isn't feature-packed but it can print high quality documents and photos, and the integrated Wi-Fi makes it easy to connect and control wirelessly.

The HP Photosmart Premium C309g-m is great for printing photos, both from memory cards and HP's Snapfish service. However, it lacks several features and we had some issues when connecting to a wireless network.

Though relatively expensive, Lexmark's new mid-range inkjet multifunction is easy to use and manage thanks to a large touch screen and SmartSolutions widgets. Unfortunately, it is hampered by poor print quality and slow speeds.

Canon's PIXMA iX7000 offers A3+ printing and automatic duplexing, but lacks the simplicity and usability of cheaper printers. It prints slowly but its output on glossy media is fantastic thanks to the use of pigment-based ink technology.

Canon's PIXMA MP640 inkjet multifunction offers network connectivity, a sizeable colour LCD and USB flash drive support. It's not a fast printer, but you can expect the same excellent print quality you get from other Canon inkjets.

Epson's Stylus Office T1100 A3+ inkjet printer is quite bulky and it doesn't have Ethernet or an automatic duplexer. Thankfully it can scale A4 documents extremely well and the quality of photos is sufficient for occasional use.

HP's Officejet 7000 Wide Format inkjet printer brings A3+ printing to the networked office. Dedicated to marketing materials more than anything else, it won't produce the best quality photos but this printer is cost effective and reasonably fast in our print tests.

Epson's Stylus Office TX510FN inkjet multifunction is an extremely affordable way to print documents over a network. Despite its good mono document print quality, this multifunction produces poor colour quality overall.

The Epson Stylus Office TX610FW inkjet multifunction's low consumable costs and integrated Wi-Fi are a big boon to small businesses looking for a cheap alternative to colour laser printers, but it works better as a local printer than a networked device.

Although it prints surprisingly good photos, this colour laser MFP has too many limitations for the price.

The HP Officejet 6000 inkjet printer won't replace your laser or dedicated photo printer, but it strikes a middle ground between the two. While slow, it can produce professional colour documents to show off your products and services.

Kyocera Mita's FS-C5300DN makes high-volume color printing affordable — and it pumps the pages out fast. Assuming you can do better than the list price, this printer would work well in a mainstream business office with basic color needs.

Brother's MFC-8890DW monochrome laser multifunction produces great quality documents at a quick pace, and it has wireless connectivity. We weren't impressed by its cluttered control panel and oversimplified Web interface, however.
