SonicWall, like some other vendors in this space, is teetering between the SMB market and a desire to spread into the high-end enterprise firewall business. After testing the SonicWall PRO 5060, it is clear that some businesses will find this a good fit for a UTM firewall. With its powerful UTM features -- except for the IPS -- SonicWALL's PRO 5060 really goes beyond the check-box UTM definition and tries to provide a higher level of security and unified-threat protection and management.

The Panda GateDefender Integra 300 is very bound to sys-admin culture and so requires some solid network-management skills. But if you're already an expert, you'll appreciate how it does almost everything from inside a single rack-mounting box.

This is a new-generation networking kit that will provide fast transfer rates between a server and a receiving device. It's easy to setup and can be connected to receiving devices via a 5GHz-compatible wireless 802.11 draft-n signal or Ethernet. It won't work with existing 802.11g equipment, but that's not a problem if you already have an 802.11g network and just want something to service your media devices and gaming consoles exclusively.

ClamWin Free Antivirus is a solid free antivirus program. We wouldn't recommend that you use it as your sole method of protection, but it is well worth having as an extra level of security.

Some less-than-friendly default behaviours make Avira AntiVir Personal a better choice for tech-savvy users who know how to muck about in the settings. If you're willing to put up with a somewhat clumsy interface and the recurring pop-up ads, in return you'll enjoy top-notch, free protection against malware. It's not a bad trade-off by any means.

Although running an extra on-demand scan can be good as backup for your regular antivirus application, ClamWin Free Antivirus' poor detection rate means that you are better off running an online scan from a commercial software maker, such as BitDefender or F-Secure, and avoiding this open-source project.

AVG 8.5 Free is well-rounded overall, but its second-tier malware detection rate should make you consider one of the better-performing programs first.

Even if it wasn't free, AVG Anti-Virus 8.0 Free would be a good antivirus product.

Alwil Avast Antivirus Home Edition will do a decent job protecting a PC from malware, and it's free, but if you're willing to put up with a less-than-perfect interface (and some ads), you're better off going with Avira's top-notch blocking.

K9 is an effective Web filter for parents. It's easy to use, won't take up noticeable system resources and can even guard against keyword searches. With nothing to pay, it's well worth checking out.

Our experience with Comodo Internet Security's antivirus component leaves us little reason to recommend it. Other pieces of free antivirus software do much better at protecting a PC. Comodo's firewall might be useful (again, we didn't test this feature), but its antivirus is definitely not.

The beta of NIS 2009 shows that Symantec is on track to vastly improve performance in Norton. The UI is clear and uncluttered, putting front and centre only the elements most users need to see, while allowing for easy drill-down for those who want more. Having said that, we'd like the CPU usage meter to be easier to access. It would match the product's one-click ease of use in other areas. Still, with so much performance enhancement, such quibbles get left in the dust of this speedy, smooth new suite.

So should you download this beta version of Norton Internet Security 2010? Given its installation bugginess — and the fact that it appears that the subscription may last only 14 days — the answer is most likely no. And since it uninstalls whatever security program is already running, you certainly won't want to put it on your primary computer. The software is set to be final sometime in the autumn; you'd do well to wait until then.
