The Sun Fire X2270 is an impressive entry into the Nehalem-based server market. Sun's x64-based hardware has been superlative for the past few years, and these new servers are the latest in a line of solid server platforms. Leveraging the surprising power of the Nehalem architecture, the Sun Fire X2270 should find a home just about anywhere — assuming that Oracle's acquisition of Sun doesn't rock the boat.

HP BladeSystem Matrix incorporates a wide array of moving parts and ties them together well. It’s still a significantly complex solution, but part of the purchase price includes integration. The hardware is impressive, and the management tools are functional if not completely polished. HP might not have reached the Holy Grail of general datacentre automation just yet, but it's definitely on the right track.

Apple's Nehalem Xserve packs more into one rack unit than any other server. For one price, you get a best-in-class server and a commercial Unix OS with unlimited client licenses, plus a foolproof management GUI. The 2.26GHz eight-core model outguns and out-greens the original 3GHz, eight-core Harpertown Xserve if you fill it with RAM.

The Sun Fire X4150 is a "2U" workhorse squeezed into a 1U chassis. Sporting two quad-core Intel Xeon CPUs, up to 64GB of RAM and eight internal 2.5-inch 10K SAS drives, it's a monster of a system, blazing through database and Web serving benchmarks in the lab. Even the little details are there, such as internal USB 2.0 ports (in addition to two in the front and two in the rear), redundant power supplies, four built-in Gigabit Ethernet ports, and more. Thin is definitely in with the X4150.

As the little brother to the Sun Blade 8000 series, the 6000 series offers plenty of expansion, and more blade options than any other blade system. With SAS/SATA SFF disk support, optional RAID 0, 1, 5, 10 on the Intel blades, CompactFlash support, and a well-designed expansion card layout, it's a solid system for a nice price.
