Version 8 upholds Photoshop Elements' reputation as one of the top consumer-level photo editing programs. Its new edit tools, content, and templates are certainly appealing. If you already have Photoshop Elements 7, however, note that the primary reason to upgrade to Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 is the new edition's improved facility for keywording and managing your database of media. If your collection of photos is small, you may be fine sticking with 7.

Don't get us wrong - Photo Art Studio is a fun little program. If you don't ask too much of the software, you can end up with usable, even charming pictures and cards for sharing and printing. Beginners will probably enjoy playing with it, as they learn how to handle their digital photos. However, we predict that most users will outgrow the program sooner rather than later. At that time, you might want to consider moving up to a full imaging program such as Photoshop Elements, and/or a framing plug-in, such as OnOne Photo Frame.

No question about it, SilverFast SE is not for everyone. If you just want to get a quick scan of your photo, whatever software came with your device will probably work just fine for your needs. But if image quality is a high priority for you, check out the trial download of SilverFast SE.

If you're the kind of photographer who used to like processing your film in a darkroom (or wishes you could have), you'll enjoy fiddling with your RAW files in PhaseOne Capture One. It's definitely for the person who wants to take the time and put in the effort to assure the best photos possible.

QuarkXPress 8.1 is an essential upgrade for users of version 8. Small, but significant, touches like XML Import may also prompt new users to invest in the old publishing warhorse.

The latest enhancements turn modo into an even better all-round tool, though it does come at a fairly hefty price.

Despite some quirks, we recommend Serif PagePlus X4 highly. With its new integrated PhotoLab, enhanced drawing tools, and direct import of text from files, PagePlus X4 is a comprehensive, worthwhile upgrade that can stand on its own.

Flow won’t suit everyone -- creatives who mainly work on single-use, unrelated projects will have little use for it -- but if you spend a lot of time on multi-faceted projects with lots of different versions and shared assets, Flow could make your life so much easier.

Topaz Simplify offers photographers a wide range of options for creative expression. The result is of a quality that pros can use, but the interface is easy enough for anyone to master.

Arcsoft Photostudio Darkroom 2 is an uneven program. It offers some great editing tools in the Process module, but the Browser and Print modules are limited, as if they were afterthoughts on the part of the software designers.

Of course, PhotoStudio is no Photoshop. But Arcsoft Photostudio 6 remains a gem of cost-effective photo editing, and it handles the tasks of greatest interest to consumer photographers fairly well.

Provided you don't hand it complex documents with masses of headings, subtitles, you can expect very good results from Readiris Pro 12. The software is quite versatile and should prove a sound addition to the typical office or home. At around US$100 for an upgrade version, it's well worth the money for anyone with an older version of the software. The full package isn't cheap though, and if you're a home user just looking for higher accuracy, you may find the cheaper Home edition more attractive.
