Given that we were running beta code, Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 was fairly complete and solid. Be mindful that it's 64-bit, so you need Windows Server 2008 and 64-bit Microsoft SQL Server 2005 or 2008. And you'll have a better experience with Office 2010. Otherwise, exercising the beta should give you a head start on planning your migration.

Until Microsoft offers more than press releases for its Office Web Apps there is not much we can say. But given its dominance in the office software market we can assume Microsoft's entrance into this space to make huge waves in the nascent market of cloud-based office productivity applications.

This is a quick first look at an early version of the Community Technology Preview (CTP) of Microsoft Office 2010. We'll report back a full verdict when a later version is released.

Despite not quite living up to the tailored-for-netbooks hype, Corel Home Office Suite is a worthy and more affordable alternative to Office 2007 for those who need only the basics.

At glance, this suite of applications looks very promising. Adobe just needs to put it back in the oven a bit longer before charging customers for it.

If you don't need many high-end features, Ashampoo Presentations will save you a lot of money compared to PowerPoint, and is well worth a look — and potentially, a purchase.

We've been using OpenOffice for years now. With these performance and appearance improvements, we can see more users moving to this free office suite. In particular, we think anyone who does spreadsheets every day owes it to themselves to compare Calc and Excel. You'll be impressed.

The classic one-trick pony, DVDShow for PowerPoint is very good at what it does — but would you want to shell out more than this much just to convert presentations to MPEG?

If you've ever received a document file in a format you can't read, Textmaker Viewer 2009 might be for you — just be sure to check the supported formats (most common modern ones, but not a lot of truly ancient formats like Wordstar or Wordperfect) to be sure it will work. It's free, it doesn't take up a lot of disk space, and if it's useful even once, it's worth the download.

MindRaider is free and open source, and is actively supported and developed. Those who want to make use of it (or who are reading this review and thinking we're idiots for not "getting it") should download it and try it out.

If you need to control multiple PCs, Input Director is worth the effort. After all, Input Director is free, and that's hard to pass up.

WebSpy Analyzer Standard 4.3 is particularly impressive in its range of reporting tools, but to get the most out of these you will need to be prepared to put in a considerable amount of time and effort setting up the required profiles.

If you haven't tried mind-mapping software but want to, MindManager is a solid program. If you already have it, however, I'd hold off on upgrading to version 8 until some of the kinks are worked out.

Even in its current state, Zoho Notebook is well worth checking out if you need a home for brainstorming, research, and random data.
