Adobe Premiere Elements 8 is an appealing upgrade for anyone interested in organising videos, editing them, and compiling them into attractive, fun movies. With its underlying power and its significantly improved ease of use, it's a good value.

Version 8 upholds Photoshop Elements' reputation as one of the top consumer-level photo editing programs. Its new edit tools, content, and templates are certainly appealing. If you already have Photoshop Elements 7, however, note that the primary reason to upgrade to Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 is the new edition's improved facility for keywording and managing your database of media. If your collection of photos is small, you may be fine sticking with 7.

By allowing you to import Illustrator or Photoshop artwork and turn them into interactive Flash, Catalyst jumpstarts any Flex project. I can't overstate how accessible and easy to use I found Flash Catalyst.

At glance, this suite of applications looks very promising. Adobe just needs to put it back in the oven a bit longer before charging customers for it.

Embedded Flash, native H.264 video, 5.1 channel surround sound and real-time audio mixing and effects will provide a lot of oomph to your projects. Shockwave penetration and RTMP-based streaming keeps Director valid in the Web market, but in the gaming arena there are now strong contenders to this old warhorse.

Current InDesign users will want the CS4 version for Smart Guides and Live Preflighting; other new additions make it worth the upgrade price, too.

The CS4 release bolsters the software with some powerful and innovative features that will appeal to current users — but they’re unlikely to be enough to woo over existing FCP or Avid editors.

This is a major development in Flash’s evolution. There are some great new features and kinks have been worked out. However, it’s frustrating that Adobe has felt the need to try to make Flash feel more consistent with the other Creative Studio applications.

Adobe Audition 3.0 may not be the cheapest but it remains a top-notch audio editing program. More than just a MIDI controller and audio program, it lets you graphically and colourfully see deep inside the inner workings of music and audio samples, while helping create pro-grade audio output.

After Effects CS4’s new tools are all welcome additions, but we were expecting more from the new release.

This simpler approach definitely takes Version Cue out of the way, while keeping its capabilities available when desired. The biggest change is having to switch to Bridge to create projects, manage their file sets, and "promote" older versions over more recent changes — you no longer do such actions in the individual CS4 programs. Administering your virtual servers — the project sets, and the access controls for the — remain in essence the same as in previous versions.

The upgrades to Adobe Premiere Elements 7 didn't strike us as very compelling. We like the addition of downloadable walkthroughs and templates, the Smart Tags, and the ability to sync files without thinking about it. But the interface needs some housecleaning, Elements' integration with Photoshop.com is pretty thin, and its integration with third-party services even thinner. More Webbiness is fine, but what we really want is more YouTubiness.

Simplified workflow system, increased Flash integration, and community expansion — Adobe Creative Suite 4 certainly looks like a compelling step forward. We'll be updating our review to add more depth to our conclusions over the coming weeks.

For anyone seeking a combination image editor and organizer that doesn't break the bank, Photoshop Elements 7 is a powerful contender. The program's new online components permit you to do more from within a familiar interface, and its new tools alone make it worth the upgrade.

In a Windows environment Acrobat 9 Pro is the mid-priced option, mainly of interest to designers and professional printers who want to use PDF/X files. However, printers mainly use PDF/X-1a or PDF/X-3, which can be created by Acrobat 8 Professional if you’ve got that already. For Mac users, Pro is the only option if you want to upgrade from 8. Sadly, Adobe’s UK prices are a rip-off.
