In a world where many free programs can handle basic burning tasks and even basic audio video chores, you should spend your money carefully on software that makes video editing, disc authoring, and possibly Blu-ray playback easy. Roxio Creator 2010 shines in those areas, but so do a host of less expensive individual competitors.

For new users, Roxio Creator 2009 is a good deal. Roxio Creator 2009 is a massive installation (3GB of disk space is required) and a bit slow to switch between modules, but the look and the feel of the content it produces are excellent. If you already have Roxio Media Creator, take a close look to see whether Creator 2009 offers anything you urgently need. If not, wait for the next iteration.

The capabilities of this suite are pretty impressive, especially the enhanced system recovery tool, which offers much more control than the utilities built into Windows. There's a slightly stripped down version that's around $50 cheaper but, as this consists only of File Backup and Disaster Recovery, it is genuinely less useful.

With more versatility than a Swiss Army knife, Creator is a great solution for home enthusiasts. It’s forward thinking, with support for Vista and Blu-ray -- but you might want to keep a copy of Paint Shop Pro handy for photo editing.

The fact that you can’t get around copy-protected DVDs devalues this software package, although it still offers plenty for the price.
