Norton Utilities 14 is a means of keeping all of your system maintenance links in one place, but it delivers little that you can't already do with Windows. Two things it does bring to the table are the registry tools, which are useful, and the performance monitor, which is interesting but not always useful.

Norton Ghost 14.0 is a mature product for the thankless task of safeguarding data against the unthinkable event of hard disk failure, theft or virus havoc. Being able to return to restore points additionally assists recovery from accidental deletion and loss of files. Its interface is good, although with the number and breadth of features available, you'll need to spend some time getting to know everything it can do to get the best from Ghost.

A raft of small but useful improvements make Norton 360 2.0 a useful addition to anyone's utility tool bag. It remains powerful and yet very easy to use. At the same time, it's not dumbed-down enough to deter power users.

NIS remains as good as it ever was. The 2008 edition is a solid choice for family networks -- its antivirus and spyware protection is excellent. Add to this a top-quality firewall, Identity Safe and a simple help system and you have a winner.

Norton AntiVirus 2008 continues the recent upwards trend. Its AV capabilities remain world-class (it's the only antivirus with over seven years of consecutive VirusBulletin 100 detection awards) and yet remain easy to use. A good choice for small family networks.

Unless you're looking at remote management - for which you need server versions of Acronis - True Image is a slightly better and cheaper product. But Ghost is extremely close on its heels, and is evidently improving. This is one example of competition being beneficial to the development of rival products.

We liked the idea of being able to buy a cheaper package that gives you all the useful tools found in SystemWorks without forcing you to opt for Norton AntiVirus. There are lots of other virus protection suites on the market, some of which cost nothing. However, it's a good idea to opt for a package such as this that fills in the gaps left by free products.
