All in all, Corel Digital Studio 2010 left me disappointed and frustrated.

Despite not quite living up to the tailored-for-netbooks hype, Corel Home Office Suite is a worthy and more affordable alternative to Office 2007 for those who need only the basics.

Corel Painter 11 is a worthwhile upgrade overall — and a must if you have a Wacom Intuous or Cintiq tablet and use its virtual pencils, chalk, pastels and other nonpaint tools to do sketching.

There is a wealth of Windows technical illustration software around the sub-$500 mark, but if you want the bitmap and 3-D functionality offered here too, as well as library of 4000 ready-to-use symbols, this suite probably provides better value in the long run. If you work with 3-D CAD models, you should be aware of the import limitations of Deep Exploration CSE, though.

Corel VideoStudio Pro X2 has a slightly better range of features than Adobe's Premiere Elements 7, and VideoStudio's tools are easier to see than Elements'. Elements still has a few unique features that we like — for example, better timeline features. We'd say VideoStudio X2 is the better choice if you have an underpowered PC, and Elements gets the nod for those with fast PCs.

If you have a lot of pictures and need to free up some hard drive space, or if you need to shrink giant, photo-laden e-mail messages, WinZip 12 is a tempting way to make it happen. If you don't, it's still a handy program to have around.

Price-conscious buyers are more likely to look at completely free competitors such as OpenOffice.org and IBM Symphony. Nevertheless, WordPerfect keeps its best features and adds enough new ones to keep current users satisfied - and its increased compatibility with Microsoft Office is worth the upgrade fee.

Strong performer with high-def video; all video editors could use its "pause rendering" feature.

What's not to like about Painter X? If we had designed it, we would have tried to streamline its interface, which hasn't changed much: Dig into its array of tools, settings and options, and your canvas may get overloaded with palettes and toolbars. Even as is, though, this upgrade is meaty enough to please professional artists and serious amateurs alike.

Minor irritations aside, we think people who use their PC for business -- and who are looking for a real productivity-suite upgrade -- might very well find what they need in Corel WordPerfect Office X3.

CorelDraw Graphics Suite X3 is neither as complete nor as powerful as Adobe's Creative Suite 2.0, but graphic designers on a budget who don't need web design or layout applications would do well to consider this. X3 is a realistic option for professionals, but its real value remains as an easy-to-use application for business users. As such, it's certainly worth the asking price.
