Project Server 2007 is not only a worthwhile upgrade to Project Server 2003 from a stand-alone perspective, it also has the capability to change how teams work and get managed when used in combination with SharePoint Server 2007. There's a definite learning curve here for server administrators as well as a meaty planning process, but the benefits of that work can be huge.

If you're not backing up off-site to guard against data disaster, you should be, and Fabrik is as good a way to do it as any, especially when it has 2GB for free.

Microsoft's attempt at toppling VMware VI3 is chock-full of classic embrace-and-extend goodness, including support in System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 (tested in beta) for managing VI3 assets. The Hyper-V hypervisor technology is sound and should scale well enough to challenge VMware's ESX Server. However, Microsoft still lags in the area of high availability, though the functionality in Virtual Machine Manager should be good enough to deliver wins in less demanding virtualization environments.

While not an outright replacement for AutoCAD or VectorWorks, Arcon's 3D Architect package is very user-friendly, allowing the beginner and casual-user to articulate standard aspects of architectural concepts, with useful construction templates included. The only slight blot on the horizon is Google's free SketchUp, available to visualise 3D architectural designs. However, 3D Architect is more sophisticated, and represents better value for the beginner and casual-user, than the payment-required SketchUp Pro and obviously, AutoCAD or VectorWorks.

ShrinkMyTunes is a nice idea, but we do have doubts about the drop in quality of the sound. Having said that, ShrinkMyTunes does offer a full 14-day money back guarantee, so it's worth having a go to see whether you find the results acceptable or not -- after all, you could save yourself the cost of a new hard drive or iPod.

Intuit QuickBooks Pro & Payroll 2008's documentation is concise and very clear, and this really is one program that even the occasional user will be able to get to grips with when running their business. Expert users may prefer to stick with Sage, but for anyone else QuickBooks really is the most intuitive application in this field. The only negative is that, compared to MYOB, this is a touch pricey.

The innovative image-based, dynamic-immersion method is an effective way to make learning a language more intuitive. It certainly provides a swift route to becoming more fluent in the tongue you are trying to master, but it does come at a high price. It costs $US339 for the first two levels, and should you want to buy all three then you'll spend $US499 - considerably more if you buy the levels separately.

We were impressed with QuarkXPress 8.0. if you've been waiting for a compelling reason to make the move from Quark 4.0 or 5.0, then this may well be it. However, if you're looking for your first professional DTP program, then there's no getting away from the huge price tag with which QuarkXPress 8.0 is saddled, nor the fact that you can kit yourself out with Adobe Creative Suite 3.0's InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator or Dreamweaver package for only several hundred dollars more.

Ability Office Business version 5.0 falls between unpolished free gems such as OpenOffice and Google Docs, and the ultra-expensive, feature intensive Microsoft Office 2007. But unlike free rivals, Ability is feature-rich and familiar to MS Office users. It will make a welcome, inexpensive and useful addition to almost every office workstation.
