Yosemite FileKeeper Pro 2.8 is a first-class product. It works transparently, getting on with the job of protecting data without fuss, complication or by tying down the PC. You always have a backup of files regardless of whether the backup drive has always been available, and those files will be only minutes old if a primary drive fails. At the same time, it allows a sophisticated degree of control over backup. Stable for the several months we've tested it, Yosemite FileKeeper Pro 2.8 is the backup program we'd use on a laptop if our data depended on it.

DiskDigger is a free, easy-to-use recovery program that in many cases works as well as EasyRecovery Professional, Active@ File Recovery, etc. If you need to recover data, your mouse should run, not walk, to the download link. It's hard to believe that it's free.

We had reservations about the first release of BullGuard Backup, not so much because of the software which was a delight to use, but the rather stingy storage provision. Now that Bullguard has addressed this issue, BullGuard Backup 8.0 comes highly recommended.

"Handy" sums up MyCopernic ON THE GO. It's a useful way to find and access files remotely, but we'd rather use a full-fledged remote access service - particularly given that a product that costs $12.94. LogMeIn, for example, offers a free service for controlling a computer remotely; and since you can view your desktop as if you were sitting in front of it, you can do a lot more than just search for file.

If Phoenix Technologies addresses version conflicts and the inability to store backups on BeInSync servers, BeInSync could become an excellent business tool for managing your data.

Nero 9 is definitely a better product than version 8, and for new users it's a great tool. Versus the similarly priced Roxio Creator 2009, the story remains largely the same: Nero is less friendly, slightly more powerful in audio and encoding, and decidedly faster. Roxio still provides better templates. Both suites support Blu-ray BD-MV authoring with menus through additional plug-ins.

Microsoft Windows Search 4.0 improves on the already impressive Windows Desktop Search and integrated search tools of Vista and Windows Server 2008, providing better manageability and streamlined performance. IT shops with mixed Windows versions will appreciate the strong support for legacy platforms (XP, Server 2003) and the fact that Microsoft continues to make its search technologies freely available.
