The extra desktop space that 360desktop offers will be welcomed by most users, and panning through it is easy, but it's no competitor to Apple's Spaces just yet. A promised WebSticker management system would go a long way to change that, especially if it makes any widget work. However, advertising on people's desktops may prove to be a sticky issue.

The interface may be befuddling in spots, but True Image is the best all-around backup utility available. Find a demo of it here for download.

There's nothing wrong with Acronis Disk Director Suite 10.0 — it's just a lot like driving a 20-year-old car. You can get where you want to go, but it feels as if there must be a better way.

Unlike Ghost 9.0, True Image works with any version of Windows. It is also extremely user-friendly.

Basically, the best just got better. Whether the advanced features in True Image Home 2009 are worth paying for when a free competitor such as Paragon's Drive Backup Express is on the loose — well, that's for you to decide.

Acronis True Image Home 2010 is the first upgrade to True Image we've seen in a while that didn't have "must maintain revenue stream" tattooed all over it. There may still be a few bugs we haven't spotted yet in this new version, but so far it has proved stable, as well as a most satisfying improvement. A 30-day trial on the company's website lets you take a pain-free look-see at Acronis True Image Home 2010.

Since Drive Manager is free, we would recommend downloading it and seeing if it is useful to you. It is the subject of active and ongoing development, so we can hope that the issues we encountered will be cleared up soon.

Given that MaxMem's free — and that it uninstalled cleanly from our tester PC — you might want to give it a try. As the saying goes, your mileage may vary.

With limited support for Windows calendar apps — and a barrel of configuration problems — MobileMe is no bargain for Windows users.

My guess is that during a normal workday, Core Tuner's performance benefits will never make up for the resources and CPU cycles utilised by the program sitting in the system tray.

At $82, Ashampoo WinOptimizer 6.0 isn't cheap. But if you want an all-in-one system optimiser that does a superb job, you'll find it worth the money.

Power users will certainly welcome Ashampoo PowerUp, even if it doesn't offer as much advice for those with a less technical background.

The price tag is hefty, but there are enough extra features to justify it. Included is a registry cleaner, hard drive cleaner, hard drive defragmenter, disk scrubber, and a whole slew of other utilities, all full-featured and functional in their own right. If you don't need any of these, perhaps a cheaper and simpler program is better.

Aside from the worrisome translation and operational glitches, DriveClone Pro works fairly well and it's easier to use than True Image. But it's also more expensive than the majority of the competition, and backing up in parallel via FTP isn't enough to warrant the extra cost - especially for a program that appears to have been pushed out the door a couple of weeks shy of readiness. It's a pity; with a little more work, DriveClone Pro might not be singing the sad song of the second fiddle.
