After a copyright infringement suit involving the makers of Pilot pens, Palm dropped the Pilot moniker. Still, to many people, the name PalmPilot is synonymous with "personal digital assistant").

Introduced in 1998, the $400 Palm III added an infrared port for transferring files and contact information; it also had both EDO SD-RAM memory (2MB) and flash ROM memory (2MB), so removing the batteries did not wipe out data.
