Free BlackBerry apps: Nine Torch 9800 compatible downloads

CIO.com's BlackBerry watcher Al Sacco rounds up nine valuable, free BlackBerry apps that'll run on RIM's brand new BlackBerry Torch 9800 slider smartphone.

Tag Reader for BlackBerry

You know those funky, multicolor barcode-like “tags” popping up on movie posters, flyers, in magazines and just about everywhere else? They’re meant to quickly provide cell-phone users with additional information on a given subject, and they’re really quite cool. But they’re also useless if you don’t have an app that can translate them into Web links, like Microsoft’s (MSFT) free Tag Reader. Simply snap a pic of the tag using the free app and you’re golden.

Download Tag Reader via BlackBerry.

For work use, Microsoft Word and Excel programs pre-installed on the device are adequate for preparing short documents.

LIFEBOOK UH574

The Fujitsu LifeBook UH574 allowed for great mobility without being obnoxiously heavy or clunky. Its twelve hours of battery life did not disappoint.

STYLISTIC Q702

The screen was particularly good. It is bright and visible from most angles, however heat is an issue, particularly around the Windows button on the front, and on the back where the battery housing is located.

STYLISTIC Q702

My first impression after unboxing the Q702 is that it is a nice looking unit. Styling is somewhat minimalist but very effective. The tablet part, once detached, has a nice weight, and no buttons or switches are located in awkward or intrusive positions.
