In Pictures: The hidden fangs of Windows 8.1 - and how to avoid them

Before you install Windows 8.1, make sure you understand the gotchas and how not to get bit

Boot to desktop -- with an explanation Solution: The Taskbar and Navigations Properties dialog in the preceding slide has an oddly worded option, “When I sign in or close all apps on a screen, go to the desktop instead of Start.”

If you check this box, every time you log on to Windows, Windows takes you to the old-fashioned desktop. That much is clear. What isn’t so clear: If you exit all Metro apps -- by swiping each one down from the top of the screen -- Windows takes you to the desktop, too.

However, if you shut down all of your running desktop apps, Windows doesn’t do anything, it just sits on the desktop, as it would in Windows 7 or XP.
