There wasn't a lot of holiday cheer for Microsoft's Security Response Center late last year.
Using the Internet, shoppers can locate the products they want, spot the best prices, and sidestep sleazy retailers -- in short, speed up and eliminate the hassles from shopping. Right? Not necessarily.
Like all Windows before it, Windows Vista will introduce a number of new technologies and features -- and, as usual, Microsoft has coined terms (most of them trademarked) for each and every one. Here's a quick glossary.
With breakthroughs such as faster multicore processors on the way, raw PC muscle is about to return with a vengeance. And it will come in more shapes and sizes than ever.
It's first thing in the morning and you're at the office. You're sipping your coffee and sifting through e-mail, but you're not quite ready to delve into the real work of the day. So what are you gonna do? Fire up your Web browser and distract yourse...
An online game is an odd place to have your reputation precede you. But that's exactly what happened to me not long ago in the massively multiplayer universe of EVE Online. My character there, a spaceship pilot named Walker Spaight, was minding his o...

Recently, I had a chance to sit down with a few folks from Apple Computer who gave me a guided tour of Apple's upcoming server operating system, which is slated for release sometime in the spring of 2007. Mac OS X Server 10.5, or Leopard, will be the...
Whether you're interested in a music-format podcast, or one that's primarily spoken-word, you'll inevitably run into some vexing issues. The issues always seem to stem from the nature of audio recording and how the raw files at your fingertips, await...
Technopundits have predicted the arrival of "smart spaces" for years. Your car sends a message to a robot in your kitchen, so it can have your martini ready when you arrive home in the evening. A software agent on your LAN knows not to interrupt you ...
Living together is pretty accepted way for modern couples to test a relationship before marriage. So shouldn't there be a way for modern computer users to test Microsoft's Windows Vista before making the deep commitment of buying and installing it on...
Microsoft's Zune finally shipped, and everyone agrees: It's nice but definitely no "iPod killer." But it could be. And should be. I'll tell you how in a minute.

First impression on unpacking the Q702 test unit was the solid feel and clean, minimalist styling.
For work use, Microsoft Word and Excel programs pre-installed on the device are adequate for preparing short documents.
The Fujitsu LifeBook UH574 allowed for great mobility without being obnoxiously heavy or clunky. Its twelve hours of battery life did not disappoint.
The screen was particularly good. It is bright and visible from most angles, however heat is an issue, particularly around the Windows button on the front, and on the back where the battery housing is located.
My first impression after unboxing the Q702 is that it is a nice looking unit. Styling is somewhat minimalist but very effective. The tablet part, once detached, has a nice weight, and no buttons or switches are located in awkward or intrusive positions.
