The Canon EOS 7D is definitely for the action photographer: It has a fast burst mode and captures huge images. Its high ISO performance is very good, but we found its focus to be hit and miss.

The Pentax X70 is smaller and lighter than nearly every other camera in its class--depending on your hand size, that might be either good or bad. Although its diminutive size gives it a slightly fragile feel, I love being able to tuck the camera into my backpack or throw it around my shoulder and hardly know it's there. I'd just make sure I purchased a backup rechargeable battery to tote along with it.

Overall, despite the Pentax K2000's stellar image quality and what the company has done to make this model appealing and easy to use, it is difficult to recommend the K2000 wholeheartedly due to its focusing shortcomings.

Panasonic's LUMIX DMC-GF1-K is a solidly built compact camera that lets you use different lenses. It's capable of capturing beautifully clear images and it's fast. It does have some issues when focusing in dim lighting, and noise is noticeable at high ISO speeds.

Its picture quality is very good overall, but it does suffer from some fringing issues.

Seeing as the Sony Alpha a330 contains a nearly identical feature set and the same imaging chip as its predecessor, this camera is not worth an upgrade, nor is it hearty enough to take on the latest models from Nikon and Canon. But for consumers new to DSLRs and looking for a camera with advanced features that's easy to tote around, the inexpensive Sony a330 meets its mark. It's very simple to handle - and it offers the added benefit of Live View.
