Overall, ZoneAlarm Extreme Security offers the most complete set of security features of any suite we've tested — from online backup and ID fraud protection to solid antivirus and firewall tools. Where it counts, ZoneAlarm did well in blocking traditional and zoo malware and removing rootkits. It could do better on behaviour-based protection, however.

AVG Internet Security 8.5 did very well with traditional and zoo malware, but it didn't do so well using just heuristics, missing the 2- and 4-week old signature file tests. Still, for the money, AVG Internet Security 8.5 is a good value that will do a strong job at protecting your computer.

If security is a must, Kingston's DataTraveler Vault - Privacy Edition is a good choice. However, if you aren't backed by corporate or government funds, this is one expensive USB flash drive.

SafeHouse also comes in a Personal Edition ($44.35) or the Professional Edition, both of which add more functions and features, for greater protection and more convenience. However, the free SafeHouse Explorer provides good basic security on its own for most average users.

You'll find a wide array of features in McAfee Internet Security Suite 2009, including backups, parental controls and antispam, along with smaller offerings such as a file shredder. And the suite did a decent job at detecting malicious software in tests. But for protecting your PC, you have superior alternatives.

As an occasionally used program to support more full-featured antivirus software and a firewall, Lavasoft Ad-Aware Anniversary Edition Free holds some potential. More demanding users - especially those without antivirus programs - should have a closer look at Lavasoft Ad-Aware Anniversary Edition Plus, or Pro. All are worth your consideration.

F-Secure Internet Security 2009 is accurate but suffers from usability drawbacks such as a requirement for a relatively high degree of user intervention. This makes it more awkward to use than some smarter rivals. F-Secure Internet Security 2009 delivers the goods to those prepared to wait.

It's not quite an 802.11n router, but it will run 802.11n-based adapters at close to 802.11n speed. It looks good, it's easy to use and it was completely reliable throughout our test period. We highly recommend this router if you want something inexpensive with which to stream HD video or a high-speed ADSL2+ connection.

Though the WRT610N isn’t first to the Australian market with simultaneous dual-band operation, it’s definitely one of the fastest and most consistent at the moment. Setting it up can be slightly annoying, but these minor niggles are easy to ignore when the router performs this well.

There are better 802.11n 2.4GHz routers, but where 5GHz is a viable option the DIR-855 is an excellent device. The ability to use both bands simultaneously without consequence is valuable for a media-heavy home.
