Network Appliance Issues Internet Security Advisory for Customers Facing Spyware Threats

 • 30 September, 2004 09:18

Network Appliance, Inc. (NASDAQ: NTAP), the leader in secure web and application delivery solutions, has issued an Internet security advisory to help customers better defend against rising spyware threats. Spyware (also known as adware, sneakware, snoopware or malware) is any technology that aids in gathering information on the Internet about a person or organisation without their knowledge. Users and organisations that do not take preventive measures are subjected to invasion of personal privacy, theft of intellectual property, increase in spam, network congestion, security compliance challenges, legal implications and vulnerability.

To help customers safeguard against spyware attacks, Network Appliance has teamed with best of breed partners like Secure Computing, Trend Micro, Websense and Webwasher, a CyberGuard company, to provide a comprehensive spyware protection system that exists at the corporate gateway and includes URL filtering of spyware Web sites, signature-based blocking, and P2P (peer-to-peer) traffic control. With the NetApp Internet Access & Security (IAS) solution, customers can deploy the joint gateway security solution to block access to Web sites offering spyware, block the spyware software itself, selectively manage internet traffic more prone to carry spyware (ie. P2P) and block the secret back channel transmissions.

Spyware:
Spyware is software that is installed on a system without user consent and is typically picked up by downloading software from the Internet, visiting misleading Web sites, or clicking on pop-up ads or links. These end user triggers allow spyware to sneak into a system and use ‘back channels’ or secret transmissions to gather personal information. In addition, Spyware software communicates ‘behind the scenes’, therefore attacks are not only difficult to detect, but also difficult to remove. As a result, spyware attacks are becoming more rampant. According to a recent Earthlink and Webroot audit of 420,000 computers, ‘trojan horses’ or system monitors planted by spyware had infected one third of the PCs surveyed.

“Recent Gartner Research notes that 9.4 million online adults have been victimised by fraud in a 12 month timeframe and spyware is one of the causes leading to fraud,” states Avivah Litan, Research Vice President at Gartner.

Within an enterprise environment, spyware has the ability to create severe liability and productivity risks for customers resulting from the invasion of corporate Internet security and increased investment spent resolving the IT invasion issue. Confidential information can end up exposed in harmful ways, while problem solving and time spent by IT managers to clean up the spyware and its destruction contribute to business downtime, lessening productivity and effectiveness. Despite the availability of spyware detection and removal programs, the best defense against these growing security attacks remains planned prevention.
