Samsung makes 82-inch LCD panel

Samsung has built what it says it the largest LCD panel yet made and will show it at this week's Cebit show in Hanover, Germany.

Samsung Electronics has built what it says is the largest LCD (liquid crystal display) panel yet made and will show it at this week's Cebit show in Hanover, Germany.

The 82-inch widescreen LCD panel supports high-definition and was built on the new seventh generation production line at the factory of S-LCD in Tangjung, South Korea, the company said.

S-LCD was created by Samsung and Sony as a joint-venture to produce advanced LCD screens for their products including flat-panel televisions and monitors. The two companies are almost equal shareholders with Samsung holding 50 percent plus one share and Sony holding 50 percent minus one share. The line will begin mass production later this month, said Samsung.

A seventh generation production line gets its name from the size of the piece of glass, called mother glass, on which the displays are made. The S-LCD line can handle mother glass of 187 centimeters by 220 centimeters.

Each substrate is large enough to produce two of the 82-inch panels, making even larger panels possible in the future. However, the line means more than just bigger displays; it should also help reduce the cost per panel for each display produced because of economies of scale that come from using larger sheets of glass.

The 82-inch panel doesn't sacrifice much because of its size. Samsung said it has a contrast ratio of 1200:1, a brightness of 600 candela per square meter and a response time of 8 milliseconds. In contrast, the 32-inch panel in one of Sony's latest LCD TVs has a brightness of 500 cd/m2 and the response time is as fast as most of the latest PC monitors aimed at computer gamers.
