RIAA site off-line, virus blamed

The Web site of the Recording Industry Association of America has been down since Wednesday, most likely the victim of a variant of the Mydoom virus.

According to a statement from Netcraft Ltd., a Web site performance monitoring company, the RIAA's Web site was targeted for a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack by the Mydoom.F virus.

Netcraft said the current RIAA site outage exceeds one that lasted four days in July 2002. The company said that outage was attributed to a DDoS attack.

In February, antivirus firm McAfee Security for Consumers said the RIAA's Web site was one of the sites that would be targeted by Mydoom.F. The virus was programmed to activate between March 17 and March 22.

"The site is temporarily unavailable, and we are working to get it back online," said RIAA spokesman Jonathan Lamy. He declined to comment on the reason the Washington-based organization's site was down.
