Five times faster than the blink of an eye

 • 09 September, 2004 16:25

Ricoh consolidates its position as a leader in high speed, wide-angle digital cameras with the launch of the breakthrough Caplio R1 this September. The most technologically advanced model released by Ricoh, this 4-Megapixel camera features the world’s fastest shooting response time and the world’s first ‘pendulum’ retracting lens system.

World’s fastest digital camera
Once again, Ricoh has broken its own world record for the fastest compact digital camera. The Caplio R1 takes just 0.05 of a second to focus and snap its subject - that’s five time faster than the blink of an eye and up to 25 times faster than other digital cameras. With the focus lock achieved this camera shoots in an almost instantaneous 0.003 of a second.

Coupled with a quick start-up time of just 0.8 of a second, the Caplio R1 is well equipped to capture spontaneous moments, even when in the battery saving, power-off mode. A hybrid auto focusing system also ensures quality images of fast-moving objects*. Furthermore, with a shooting interval of less than 0.9 of a second, continuous shooting is guaranteed to capture the perfect shot.

First slimline with fully retractable 4.8x zoom
Outperforming the extendable zoom lens of traditional digital cameras, Ricoh’s patented ‘pendulum’ retracting lens system interchanges the different lens groups within the body of the camera. In a world first, this precision technology allows a digital camera to house an extended 4.8x wide-angle optical zoom (28-135mm equivalent) within a slimline camera body.

Currently there is no other digital camera that can match the superior wide-angle zoom lens of the Caplio R1 in such a compact body. At just 100mm wide, 55mm high, and 25mm deep and weighing just 150 grams the Caplio R1 is an elegant pocket-friendly camera available in a polished silver or black metal body.

According to Ernie Clark, Marketing Manager of Ricoh’s Photographic Division, shooting speed and wide-angle have been two of the greatest limitations of digital cameras in comparison to the 35mm. This is where Ricoh has directed its R&D energy.

“Our research shows that most people use a camera to capture family moments, social occasions or travel highlights. These moments usually take place within a confined environment requiring the subjects to be squeezed into frame. A wider lens allows you to fit more into the picture while a fast shutter response time allows you to capture the atmosphere of that particular moment so you don’t end up with all these contrived and staged pictures. The Caplio R1 excels at each of these,” Clark explains.

Super long-lasting battery life
The slimline body of the Caplio R1 also houses a new generation, super long-lasting lithium-ion battery which takes up to 500 standard shots under normal conditions**. This is three times the battery life of many digital cameras and is the equivalent of 21 rolls of 24-exposure film. Users can now take the camera on holiday without having to worry about charging the battery. Both battery and charger, valued at $200, come included in the price of the camera. Standard AA alkaline batteries can be used as a back up and can still take more than 200 shots.

Superb functionality
Packed with features to satisfy the photo enthusiast, the Caplio R1 is equipped with an advanced 1cm macro for ultra close-up photos that can still be automatically focused, while the movie mode records high quality continuous AVI video with sound at a full 30 frames per second. The ‘quick adjust’ button also allows the user to customise frequently used settings to suit their particular needs.

The large 1.8 inch high-resolution LCD screen has 110,000 pixels, providing brilliant image clarity even in strong light conditions. It also enables the user to view histogram information for quick analysis of exposure accuracy prior to shooting. Previewing the detail and quality of an image before downloading or printing is easier with an 8x digital zoom review mode.

Other user-friendly features of the Caplio R1 include six practical shooting modes, consisting of portrait, sports, landscape, night-scene, text and high-sensitivity. Three high-speed continuous shooting modes are offered including the capture of 16 images on a single file.

At just $649 rrp inc GST the Caplio R1 should appeal to new and experienced users alike. Ricoh photographic products are sold through more than 1500 outlets nationally, including leading camera specialists and electronics retailers.

* It first uses the mechanical cam to achieve an approximate focus, then switches to the electronic cam to adjust for precision. This minimises shutter release by placing the lens in the correct position in the absolute fastest time
** The standard for ‘normal conditions’ is 50 per cent flash and zoom usage, LCD monitor ‘on’, 30 seconds between shots and review of all photos. On minimum power, the Caplio RX can achieve up to 5000 shots
