AMD refreshes low-power Opteron chips

AMD plans to release low power versions of its Opteron model 148, 248 and 848 processors over the next three months.

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has introduced low-power HE versions of its 2.2GHz Opteron model 148, 248, and 848 processors.

The new processors each consume about 55 watts (W) of power, compared with about 87W for the standard versions of the chips.

The first model to ship, the 248 HE was designed for single- and dual-processor systems like blade servers or network appliances, director of server & workstation marketing with AMD, Patrick Patla, said.

The 848 HE, designed for four-processor servers, would ship in May, while a uni-processor 148 HE was expected in June, Patla said.

AMD also makes low-frequency EE Opteron processors that consume about 30W of power.
