Integrated Research identifies emerging growth markets

 • 25 November, 2003 14:16

SYDNEY, NOVEMBER 25, 2003. Integrated Research (ASX:IRI)(IR) has identified the emerging and growing markets of real-time IP telephony and e-business management as its key focus areas over the next 12-36 months.

IR president and CEO Steve Killelea says IR’s new business strategy is to qualify growth markets and build new products to service existing and prospective customers entering these growth markets.

IR already has established products for IP telephony management (PROGNOSIS IP Telephony Manager for Cisco CallManager) and is expected to announce a dedicated PROGNOSIS e-business management suite in the next few weeks.

“Both IP Telephony and e-business are huge growth markets for Integrated Research,” Killelea reveals. “Companies increasingly expect instant web transactions and a dial tone every time they pick up an IP phone, and this is where IR’s PROGNOSIS software comes in to ensure their systems are up to the job of delivering on those expectations every time.”

IP TELEPHONY A HUGE GROWTH AREA

Given that a recent IDC study (1) found that IP telephony service revenue topped US$1,8 billion in 2002, and is expected to reach US$18,7 billion by next year, this confirms that IR’s decision to focus on IP telephony is a good strategic move for the business.

Additional statistics from the same IDC study also support the fact that IP Telephony is a huge growth area. The same IDC report found that unit sales of IP phones grew by 111% from 2001 to 2002 with IP telephone shipments and revenue is expected to rise at a compound annual growth rate of 108% and 80% respectively over the 2002-2005 forecast period.

"These figures from IDC confirm our strategic thinking is on the right track, but we've been well aware of the potential for some time and our homework in this respect has already been done," says Killelea.

Analyst George Hamilton from the Yankee Group says in his white paper titled "Real-Time Management of IP Telephony" (2), that the real-time management that companies like Integrated Research provide, is “a cornerstone of a successful Voice over IP (VoIP) implementation”. Hamilton’s paper also singles out IR’s own PROGNOSIS IP Telephony Manager as an example of "addressing the entire lifecycle management of IP telephony."

In the white paper, Hamilton continues to commend IR’s PROGNOSIS for having “proven to help organizations maximize the return on their IP telephony investment and offer the real-time monitoring and management required for successful IP telephony implementations."

Hamilton also says the new real-time nature of the network infrastructure mandates a proactive management approach: "Network managers need the capability to monitor the infrastructure and call quality in real time, generate detailed reports, and effectively manage the growth of the IP telephony infrastructure."

E-BUSINESS ALSO A GROWING MARKET

According to analyst firm Giga Research (3), the global e-business performance management market was valued at US$343 million in 2002, and is expected to grow at 53% per year between 2003 and 2006. Giga also expects the overall e-business market to grow from US$956 billion in 2002 to US$5734 billion in 2006.

IDC Group's Tim Grieser, Vice President, Enterprise System Management Software, says in a recent report that "Integrated Research and the PROGNOSIS products have established an impressive track record, especially in terms of the size and quality of the customer base and the importance of the applications under management.

"One of the major goals and benefits of systems management is to achieve operational simplicity along with the supported management functions - such as fast performance and high availability - and Integrated Research has a good story to tell here," says Grieser.

"It is likely that ongoing growth in e-business applications and transactions will continue to increase the importance of these management functions,” he concludes.

IR’s Killelea says that companies adopting Web technology as a business foundation, including more established businesses like banks that are using the Web to manage their BASE24 ATM and point-of-sale environments, are already realising how vital it is to manage their environments in real-time.

"Quite simply that's because their customers and partners are now doing business with them in real-time, so any disruption to their systems are in turn felt in real-time," he says. “The challenge for IR is to keep those disruptions from affecting the customer's experience and that’s where PROGNOSIS can come in to save the day so to speak.”

ABOUT INTEGRATED RESEARCH: Established in 1988, Integrated Research (www.ir.com ) is a publicly listed company (ASX:IRI) with sales and support offices in the USA, Europe and Australia.
