Collaboration with Hitachi Global Storage Technologies
Creates Powerful Solution and Breaks Cost of Ownership Barriers

Sydney 24 August 2004 – SLI-Consulting today demonstrated its newly available low cost Fibre Channel SAN, the StorageNetwork XA24. The self-contained storage array features embedded storage management software, a Fibre Channel to SATA controller and 400GB SATA disk drives from Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (Hitachi GST).

“The storage solutions that will be on display come at a time when Asia-Pacific companies desperately need an increase in storage capacity, performance, scalability, management and availability with a greater reduction in floor space. These challenges have not been met to date by existing enclosures,” said José Goldmann, Principal Consultant, SLI-Consulting.

Breaking the Price Barrier

SLI-Consulting is providing a full demonstration of the current highest density commercially available data storage array with its recently announced low cost Fibre Channel SANs for its StorageNetwork XA24 solution. The self-contained SATA storage array features embedded storage management software with the highest capacity drives available, the newly released 400GB SATA drives from Hitachi GST.

The Deskstar 7K400 is ideally suited for nearline storage and other low I/O applications. The drive provides superior capacity and award-winning performance at a comparable cost to that of tape or optical solutions. Several Deskstar 7K400 design attributes combine to enhance system performance. Among these features is the Rotational Vibration Safeguard technology (RVS). The RVS technology is used to ensure drive performance in high rotational vibration environments, where there are multiple drives in a single enclosure. The StorageNetwork XA24 achieves capacity and performance milestones while reducing the need for power and cooling due Deskstar’s efficient design characteristics.

Aimed at small and medium-sized enterprises, the XA24 can provide users with a 1 terabyte (TB) configuration starting at less than A$12, 500 and maximum 44TB configuration for A$193,000.

“Enterprise customers are looking for ways to maximize their IT investments. Using high-capacity, low-cost disk drives for nearline storage and similar applications has become extremely popular, and Deskstar 7K400 is the storage enabler,” said Pete Andreyev, Vice President of Asia Pacific, Hitachi Global Storage Technologies. “We are pleased to be extending our relationship with SLI-Consulting. They continue to offer enterprise customers a wide variety of data storage solutions and are staying on top of the latest technology advancements.”

"This live demonstration will really showcase one of Asia-Pacific’s first examples of a low-cost, intelligent, redundant and highly scalable SAN ready RAID array with a density of 199 TB/m3," Goldmann concluded.
