The 400GB version of LaCie’s Big Disk should offer more than enough storage for all but the most extravagant of users. Even if you fancy doing a lot of video editing, with DV taking up 13GB an hour you’ll still have space for over 25 hours. When formatted, the actual capacity of the drive was 372GB.
Shifting gigabytes of data around is never going to be a quick process, but LaCie has equipped the drive with the latest FireWire 800 interface — twice as fast, in theory, as the previous version. It’s also equipped with a USB 2.0 interface, in case you haven’t got a FireWire port on your PC. Copying over 5225 mixed files (336MB) took just 50 seconds using the FireWire 800 interface, with a single 495MB file coming in at 28 seconds.
This is a fair bit faster than using the USB 2.0 interface, which took 1 minute 25 seconds for the mixed files and 49 seconds for the single large file. The drive is incredibly quiet and barely audible over the background noise of a PC. It also turns on and off with the computer, so you don’t have to remember to power it down manually when you’re finished. At just over $2 per GB, the Big Disk also competes well on price.
