Mass Mailer W32/Bagle.h@MM Placed at Medium Based on Prevalence

SYDNEY, March 3, 2004 – Network Associates, (the leading provider of intrusion prevention solutions, today announced that McAfee AVERT (Anti-Virus and Vulnerability Emergency Response Team), the world-class anti-virus research division of Network Associates, placed a medium risk assessment on the recently discovered W32/Bagle.h@MM, also known as Bagle.h. This new variant uses its own SMTP engine to construct outgoing messages with a password protected .ZIP file and contains a remote access component. The worm has many of the same functionalities as its Bagle predecessors, two of which are also currently rated a medium risk threat. McAfee AVERT researchers first saw the worm earlier today and to date, have received over 100 samples of Bagle.h from both real customer submissions and virus-generated mail from customers around the world.

Most of the Bagle.h samples that McAfee AVERT has seen are from the virus itself, which is spoofing the addresses, and not from the infected customers. This is the case with most viruses at this point, the three most prevalent families being Mydoom, Bagle, and Netsky. McAfee AVERT is advising its customers to update to the 4330 DATs to stay protected from all the current Bagle threats.

Symptoms

The Bagle.h worm is an Internet mass mailer that harvests addresses from local files and then uses the harvested addresses in the ‘From’ field and sends itself using its own SMTP engine. The next recipient is thus unable to see the true sender. The worm then proceeds into the remote access component of the virus, which listens on TCP port 2745 for remote connections. Users should delete any email containing the following:

From: (address is spoofed)
Subject:

^_^ meay-meay!

^_^ mew-mew (-:

Hey, dude, it's me ^_^ :P

Argh, i don't like the plaintext :)

I don't bite, weah!

Looking forward for a response :P

Pathology

After being executed, Bagle.h emails itself to addresses found on the infected host as a password-protected .ZIP archive with the password included in the message body.
The virus listens on TCP port 2745 for remote connections. It attempts to notify the author that the infected system is ready to accept commands, by contacting various websites, calling a PHP script on the remote sites. At the time of this writing the script is inaccessible. The websites http://postertog.de/scr.php, http://www.gfotxt.net/scr.php and http://www.maiklibis.de/scr.php are contacted every 27.8 hours. Like its predecessors, this worm checks the system date. If it is the 25th March 2005 or later, the worm simply exits and does not propagate. The virus avoids sending itself to addresses containing @avp., @hotmail.com, @microsoft, @msn.com, local, noreply, postmaster@, root@

Cure
